Looking for a good LED / Lithium flashlight similar to the Surefire. It'll be used for trail walking (camping...etc) and perhaps quick car maintenance or something similar. Not a tac light for guns.

Any ideas? Amazon is full of them but I'm not sure what to get.

I have 3 of the mag lites with led. They are brutish but work well and are reliable and not too pricey. Plenty bright. I keep one in each car and another couple kicking around the house. Two years running now on black Friday lowes has had two ANd three d cell led mag lites for 15 a piece--half the normal price.

I think it is important to get a decent brand in a flashlight.there are thousands of companies it seems that make them and I believe most are complete garbage because even though the bulbs may be ok the rest of what should be a simple mechanism can fail in them.

Anything by OLIGHT / ITP or 4Sevens is a good bet. Both companies make many different sizes for various applications, from key chain size up to "tactical." Fenix makes some decent stuff too. Streamlight tends to make cheaper lights, but they should still be useful.

What size are you looking for? Something that you plan to carry in your pocket, on a key chain, or big enough to throw a massive beam / defend yourself with (if needed)?

Also, consider what type of batteries you want to use. Do you want something that uses AAAs / AAs, or do you want something bigger like a "normal-sized" Maglite that uses D cells? Then, there are always the 3V CR123A's which most of the high-end flashlights tend to use, due to their superior output (the downside, of course, is that the batteries can be difficult to find).

Just a quick tip: with many of the high-end flashlights, you'll notice a letter and a number somewhere in the description, like Q5 or R2. This is supposed to be a measure of the LED's intensity - the higher the letter / number, the better. So, a Q5 would be brighter than a Q2, but an R1 would be brighter than the Q5.

I bought several Streamlight ProTac 2L flashlights from Amazon, around $42 each. Use them for walking the dog, and stashed in the cars and garage. Well built, very pleased with them.

Mag-Lite has a new line of "tactical" flashlights: XL30, XL40, and XL50.
