Gifts from grandparents...

My birthday was in may. I got a check for $25 from my grandma. Now, I don't want to sound inconsiderate or ungrateful or anything, but I'm grown up and live on my own. $25 is a good gift for a 12 year old kid with no job, but for someone who works and pays rent and buys groceries, it's not quite so significant as a monetary amount, and it's hard to say "it's the thought that counts" to cash... It's jsut that she's been giving me this same gift since I Was about 10. I don't think she realizes I'm an adult now. I wouldn't care if she didn't send me anything at all, just seems odd to send a $25 check to a grown person.

The reason I mention this 4 months later is because I just found the check, I never got around to depositing it because I was never in desperate need of a tank of gas or anything similarly priced.

Anyway, share your odd grandparent gift stories :)

You sound like an ungrateful bastard!

When I was twelve I was lucky to get $5.

$25 is good for a movie for 2 or maybe even dinner for 2.

My grandma sends me $20 CAN (~$13US) on my birthdays, and I am very grateful of that... Actually I would rather have her just send me a card, and keep the money for herself... i'm a grown adult, make my own money, so I dont really need her cash... I would rather she keep it and buy something for herself...

Are your grandparents poor? If so, this could be all she could afford.

When I was 16, my grandma got me these baby blue pleather mittens(January B-day). I had a hard time smiling about it, and she was in the room. I said thanks, and was wondering if it was a joke. It wasn't. Oh well, grandparents can be funny sometimes.

Seriously...I understand your reasoning, congrats on growing up, but it IS the thought that counts. My grandmother will get me the most random presents, but w/o a source of income (grandfather's deceased), I still appreciate that she does anything for me.

Maybe if you had talked to her about it when you were younger, instead of an "adult", things could've changed.

If you don't want the money, I don't care how rich or poor I am, I'll still take it. :)

I was thinking this too...maybe she also wanted you to appreciate everything that you have by not spoiling you

Mine Grandma sends me $20 on my birthday and around the same amount for Xmas. It really doesn't matter to me either way.

She's not poor. And honestly I'd be more than happy to recieve jsut a card. I jsut find it odd that's she's pretty much given me the exact same thing every year for over a decade.

I don't know about your family, but my grandmother has many grandchildren plus many more great-grandchildren to take care of . She has a system in hand that she can afford and, personally, I'm grateful for whatever she gives me. For Christmas she gives my wife and me $50.

My grandma, like many people of her generation, are still living in a depression-era mindset -- paranoid about money, etc. What are you gonna do, they're pretty set in their ways.

both my Grandmothers are long dead :brokenheart:

i wish i could see them,and say I Love you to them,My one Grandmother died when i was like 6 years old,and i don't recall saying that to her.
and wish i could take Them out for lunch dinner.

When i graduated from high school my one Grandmother gave me a nice pocket watch,not gold,but,
brass,i can remember thinking; well i don't know if i will use a Pocket watch,i kinda wish she had sent me some spending money.

I still have the watch,and every time i see it i Remember her,and know that she loved me.

Even if i was a moody teenager,that was a little bit on the grumpy side;
{she said to me one day i reminded her of her one son,my Uncle,as far as being a loveable,caring grump}

So go and kiss your Grandma,and give her a hug,because life is too,too short.
