"gifting" a car ...

Dad wants to put the car under my bro's name (currently registered in NY but want to be under his name in CA). How does one proceed ... and can we put for $0 ? It's not a sale at all.

yes youcan.. first title has to moved to CA
and then you can gift it to family for 0$.. its legal to do so in CA.. not sure if it is across state lines.

you just transfer the title. Your brother will need to get some forms from his DMV, and there is probably some info printed on the title itself. AFAIK, there isn't a spot on the title transfer that specifies how much it was sold for. If you do need to specify somewhere, specify $1 instead of $0

there's a "grandfather" clause here in Michigan that exempts you from tax when registering a vehicle. If you report the vehicle as a purchase from your immediate family (grand, parents, siblings, children), the Secretary of State (or DMV) won't charge you sales tax.
