Hey,

My manger's wife gave birthday yesterday to their first baby. I would like to get a gift for them but I'm not too sure what. Any recommendation?

Stats on the couple:
religious
star trek fans
battle star galatica fans
into biking
wife likes ice cream
husband enjoys anything in O'Reily's Make Magazine.

that's true, the kid deserves it. I mean it can respirate on its own and everything. plus the nurse said it was the best baby in the neonatal unit.

Diapers diapers diapers.

formula, formula formula. (ask if bosses wife is breast feeding before you blow 60 bucks on formula)

Beer?

Maybe older infant clothes (do your best on choosing for the right season). People tend to buy clothes for the baby now. Buy something for when the baby has outgrown all those gifts!

Get something for the baby, not something for the parents, unless it's something they can use for the baby.

All new parents need lots of diapers, but I'd find out what kind they're going to use before getting them as a gift. Some people are particular about the type of diapers they want to use.

I usually either buy a couple of cute outfits (mothers love those) or fix up a little basket of several items that will be useful - bibs, burping pads, ear thermometer, teething rings, terrycloth toy, lap pads, baby lotion, powder, shampoo, wipes, etc.

Don't buy newborn sized clothes. They get so many of them that the baby outgrows them before they even make it off the hanger. Buy bigger sized ones (or infant gowns, I loved those, makes changing baby at night so easy.)

For babies of people you're not all that personally close to, a nice gift is this:

There's a set of very soft squeezable fabrick "blocks" that give different surface sensations on each face. They're maybe 3" cube, sold in a little set of about 3 or 4. Around $20.

Baby gets a variety of tactile sensations from the different surfaces, and after baby becomes able to see color, they see the different colors too. They're very soft, safe, washable, good for baby.

sounds like a winner.
