I have a young relative that has just entered high school. They used to be regarded as very bright, intelligent, and outgoing by their teachers, relatives, et cetera. They are being raised by only their mother, who has at times worked multiple jobs to keep them afloat.
Their mother admitted that she pushed to have her child classified as ADHD so she could get more assistance from the State, and apparently so she would also have the option of drugging the child up to make them more manageable. Since then, the child has become massively overweight, introverted, and has no interests outside of playing videogames all day. (Hmm, sounds a lot like some members of ATOT.
)
I have tried what I could to get the child to develop other interests, but am at loose ends. When it comes to birthdays and holidays, they want nothing more than more videogames to play. They have plenty of games already, and the house they live in is not large enough to accomadate an endless influx of material gifts.
Instead of another Christmas gift that contributes to their downward spiral, or sits collecting dust, I was thinking of putting money into one of those tax-free college accounts in their name, which they can only use towards attending a college, university, or trade school of their choice. If they wind up not going to college, then I would likely transfer the account over to another of my younger relatives.
Has anyone ever done anything like this for someone? I suspect neither the child nor the mother will be terribly appreciative of the gift, at least in the short term.
