Sure it was just a commercial, but 12 bucks a month for renters insurance is pretty appealing. Think of all the "stuff" you have in your apartment - clothes, furniture, valuables, appliances/electronics, everything.

Now imagine a fire that wipes all that out and you need to start completely over. I had two friends lose everything to a fire and it was pure hell on them because they thought renters insurance was for suckers. Check it out.

Word to the wise, your renters insurance history carries over to your homeowners insurance history... if you ever file a claim, good luck applying for homeowners insurance when/if you buy a home.

Just a heads up

There is already a superior Geico thread started... Text

Anyway, back topic, when I move into my unfurnished apartment in a month and spend tons on furniture and such I was planning on Geico's Renter insurance. I hear it is pretty outstanding.

I agree it's a good thing to have. Plus if you start a fire and it's your fault your land lord can sue the insurance co to get his $$$ instead of your ass.

Pretty much any major insurance company goes - I personally get good coverage for $112/year from State Farm, along with a discount of about 10% from car insurance :)

So if you leave the stove on and it starts a fire how is not having a ton of crap going to get you out of paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to repair the building and replace everyone else's stuff in other units that you burned to the ground?

I'd recommend it, especially if you're in a building with several people. People are inherently stupid. The more of them around, the worse your odds.

You think it won't happen to you, until the POS next door cranks up a pan of grease on his stove and LEAVES to go pick up his kid, in the middle of the day while nobody's home.

Yup. It can and will happen.

I used to rent a condo in Longwood, FL. We had some really trashy people on my floor (only 3 units per floor). I never knew how they could afford a golf course condo but they were there none the less. I had lived there about a year when they set the fucking building on fire. Only the 1 foot thick concrete walls kept those trashy fucks from burning my unit to the ground as well.

Luckily the FD was there ASAP and got the fire put out before it spread to my unit or the other unit on the floor. They had zero insurance so the owner of the unit sued their asses to collect his property damage $$$. They couldn't pay so the judge garnished their wages every pay check to pay the owner.

I have renter's insurance with Geico, good coverage and it cost me about $10 a month. I'm moving to a new place pretty soon and the apartment requires each renter to carry rental insurance as part of getting an apartment.
