That's not an SG body.

It's based on the SG body. ALmost identical.

Yeah, I can see the similarities, but it's not the same thing. SG body has identical cutaways of equal height and is symetrical on the bottom as well.

ESP probably didn't want to make soemthing exactly identical, but it is based on an SG.

Does it sound similar to one?

Most ESP's come with EMG pickups. EMG's are popular among metal guitarists, like Kirk Hammet, Alexi Laiho, etc. You can get ESP's with Seymour Duncans, like the JB/59 combo, which in my opinion sound awesome. I prefer those pickups over what Gibson has in their guitars.

The EMG's do not sound similar to the Gibson. I'm not a fan of Gibson anyways. I'd choose my ESP with the DiMarzio's I have installed in it over a Gibson.

I was planning on buying an SG but I ended up with a Les Paul and don't regret it. Granted, mine is an Epiphone, but it's still pretty sweet and sounds sick on my Fender 25W amp.

However, they have a nasty tendency to go out of tune (at least in my hands when I play one...I do play hard).

In terms of sheer tonality, nothing can touch a solid body Les Paul. Those things can sustain a note into Oblivion. They will break your back though; it's like carrying a log around.
Yeah. I prefer the tone of the SG, but the body flexes so much it's almost impossible to keep it on pitch, especially while standing. I don't know how Pete Townshend did it - as a matter of fact I got so frustrated with mine I put it through a sheetrock wall.

I have a fancy LP - an older Classic Premium Plus with Duncan Antiquity pickups. It looks like $10000000000000 and sounds tremendous. It sounds so much like Duane Allman's guitar that I can't play it without being constantly reminded how much better he was than me. I have to say that the QC on this guitar was terrible - the clearcoat on the headstock literally looked like it was done with a rattlecan an hour before it shipped. I wet-sanded it with finishing paper and buffed out the orange peel and now it looks fine. But a $3000 guitar really shouldn't need to be wet-sanded. No Agile or Ibanez would ever have left the factory looking like that.

It is a great guitar though, and I go through phases where I can't keep my hands off of it, but these days I mostly play my Fenders.

I'd prefer a USA Jackson Soloist to either, but if I had to pick, I'd take the SG Standard in Heritage Cherry.

Actually they are not. A Les Paul uses solid woods, (usually mahogony body with maple top). Although the epiphones state this also there woods are not solid but chopped and formed like plywood. You can feel the difference in weight when holding them. They sound good and look good though.

I'd love to have a Gibson of either sort, but I like the Les Paul better. It feels more playable to me and always seems to sound a bit better. I'm really not sold on the body style of the SG anyway.

I'm stuck with my Fender Strat for the time being, though. It's been a good solid guitar, but I think it's time for a change.

Such a coincidence! I just played both a Fender Stratocaster and a Gibson Les Paul yesterday. I'll take the Strat over the Les Paul anyday.

Of the 2 choices I like the Les Paul better.

I prefer my mid 80's Jackson for daily play. :)
