What would you rather play?

I would have to go with the SG, while the Les Paul sounds richer, I just think the SG has a more powerful sound.

both guitars suffer from "chainsaw" syndrome when distorted, and both don't take kindly to rough playing of any sort, whether it be the strings falling off their trees on the bridge, or the neck snapping off... all things considered, i'd take the SG for the lighter body, more focused sound, and cooler look.

I can't deal with the aesthetics of the SG or the weight of the Les Paul. Give me a Strat or Telecaster anyday over the Gibsons.

I personally love the style of the Les Paul. The curved top w/ a good color (like Translucent Amber) just does it for me.

The SG is lighter, and more playable, due to easier access to the higher frets.

However, they have a nasty tendency to go out of tune (at least in my hands when I play one...I do play hard).

In terms of sheer tonality, nothing can touch a solid body Les Paul. Those things can sustain a note into Oblivion. They will break your back though; it's like carrying a log around.

I prefer the immense tonal versatility of a Les Paul, though....I don't like single cutaways after I bought a les paul copy, because I can't grip the neck well up in the higher frets.

The SG is one of the ugliest guitars ever designed. I equate it to country rock, hillbilly jam music.

The Les Paul is one great guitar.

I agree it's pug-fugly, but I just associate it with kind of a blue-collar, garage band rock & roll feel (and most notably AC-DC). Still a hideous guitar IMO.

I'll refrain from flaming your ACDC comment, as everyone has their own tastes. But, I think the SG looks great, as well as the Les Paul. What do you think is the best looking guitar? :)

I didn't mean to denigrate AC-DC at all. I'm not particularly a fan, but I like their working-class aesthetic, and they have some rockin' tunes and don't take themselves too seriously. I'd definitely put them in at least the 75th percentile.

I know this is probably a very obvious response, but I honestly think the venerable Strat is the best-looking solid-body electric guitar, and the Telecaster the second best. If we can throw in semi-hollows, the ES-335 is beautiful too. Les Pauls and Paul Reed Smiths are nice as well.

Personally I love it the look and feel of it.

I love my Les Paul (granted it's an Epiphone, but they're made by Gibson so it's kinda the same thing)

I like the Strat also, but the Telecaster is okay.

I have an ESP Viper 400, which I replaced the the EMG pickups with DiMarzio's. Humbucker from Hell in the neck and a PAF Joe in the bridge.

Text SG Body

That's not an SG body.
