I just bought Kabuto, but I don't want to install it until I hear from some other Radeon owners. Also, which drivers should I be using? I'm using the 7062s right now. Thanks for the help. :)

Check out the Rage3d.com forums there has been a lot of discussion regarding the 7062's, 7068's and compatibility. I remember Giants being mentioned a bit.

Yeah, I went there and checked the forums. Everything seems to be running great. I even have all the bump mapping and environment mapping turned on. Though, I think the bump mapped textures look ugly.

Hmmm, that sounds odd, is there something wrong with them(rendering improperly etc)? Pretty much everything in the game is bump mapped, even the characters.

Even though you bought retail, you will need to download the latest 1.1MB patch for Giants. The 7062 drivers should work fine. If you are still timid about installing it, find out what others have to say.

PeAK, in your opinion, since you should know, what are the best current drivers? 7041 (RU, WHQL), 7062, 7068, or the older 30xx drivers?

BenSkywalker I just think some of the land bumpmaps are ugly. It's not being rendered improperly or anything as I've compared mine to screenshots.

I have the AIW Radeon, which driver I should use to get best performance out of Giants?

Any of the 7041s-7062s or 7068s would do. I have quite a preference for the 7041s though.

I changed my mind about the bump mapping. Only a few of the textures I've encountered look bad. Some of them are really good. The ones that look bad remind me of low res textures. Unless there is an option somewhere that would effect it?

The 7041's had one problem with giants on environmental bumping. the latest drivers fixed it. also im running win2k and giants is running fine at 1024x768 with everything turned on

Oldfart, asking me about which driver is best is like asking which home theatre receiver is best to someone who grew up on two channel stereo in the 70s. However, just like those complex new receivers, driver design has become much more complicated as due to the complexity of both the games and the hardware.

The general consensus seems to be that the 7041 were a major step forward for most people with a few major effects that were corrected 7062. 7062 seemed to introduce some side effects that mainly affected the video functionality of the AIW product only.

Rest assured the holy grail driver does exists...usually it is found in a device called N64, Playstation, or Dreamcast where the fixed hardware rules and game applications and "drivers" can be load down simultaneously. The problem in PC land is that the hardware is so varied that even something as simple as USB takes a few iterations to iron out the operating system, OEM driver and the hardware. It is a fact of life but graphics card companies even have to co-operate with non standard chipset protocol issues that cannot be worked around by a driver short of disabling performance. AGP 4X anyone ?

True, Peak. But still, I think that Ati owes it to us to try and fix as many of these problems as they can in as timely a manner as they can. I feel like they're dragging they're feet. I guess because I'm used to trying out a new driver every week when I had my GeForce card. :)
