Ear gauges? They're disgusting, a passing fad, stupid-looking, and irreversible. My opinion of someone takes a nosedive if I see that they have them.

Unlike tattoos, they are never easily concealed. Unlike tattoos, they are simply a passing niche fad rather than something that many people are familiar with. Unlike tattoos, they don't just look stupid, they look disgusting and apparently they even smell bad.

I have 1/2" gauges in my ears. Have had them this size for about 4 years, both ears pieced in some fashion since 1991.

I don't really give a shit what ATOT thinks of my appearance. It's fucking ATOT. lol

Can you explain them? Why did you get them? What are they for?

I wouldn't think that merely ATOT finds them somewhat odd. Humour me :)

It means, "I'm going to work at a 'cool' used book store, coffee shop or tattoo place for the rest of my life." The alternative career for the more active type is bike messenger.

They're purely aesthetic; provide no function at all. Although riding my bike or running with my stainless steel plugs can sometimes provide a whistling sound if the wind is right...

I would imagine in more conservative areas people would find them really odd, but in downtown Portland they're pretty common.

I got them because I like how they look. And getting them to 1/2" wasn't something I planned. I just kept stretching them over the years until they got to where I feel is big enough. No I'm not going any bigger. They've been this size for a couple years now.

Or a sysadmin in a NOC or otherwise hidden area filled with servers and network devices... I'm going to be in this field for life, and looking like I do has never held me back in any way.

That's not to say though that in some places and industries having piercings or tattoos won't be a hindrance to your career. It's an important thing to consider before you get something like a 1/2 inch hole in your ear.
