Ghosting Effect??

Got a setup of G400 DH 32Mb and Samsung 700IFT, using PD5.52

Got hold of BNC cables and tried them on my Samsung 700IFT. For the initial month, everything went very well and the better quality graphics the BNC produced was very impressive.

Recently, I seem to notice some "ghosting effect" on my screen. No matter what PD version I try, or screen resolution and refresh rate will not make the effect go away. Only when I got frustrated and tried changing back to 15-pin D-SUB then everything was back to normal.

What went wrong? Faulty BNC cables?
Thanx.

gum, search under my name 'compuser'. i just started a thread on this about a week ago. i have a g400 too and noticed the same problem when visiting dark bg. sites. as it turns out, many sony and non-sony owners with trinitron (AND dimondtron) tubes complained about the same problem. i don't think you can do much about it. good luck.

The ghosting effect that you guys are seeing (like on the arstechinca page) is caused by the white light being reflected off the back of the white monitor bezel of the Sony G400 (the part that covers a part of the tube we cannot see). I proved my theory this way -- take the arstechica page. Reposition the window so that the area of the ghosting affect is right smack dab in the middle of the screen. Now the ghosting affect is gone (cuz there is no white bezel to reflect back on). Wanna see the ghosting affect again in the middle of the screen? Take a piece of white paper and place it right over the white bar next to the black. Bam, ghosting affect is back.
This problem is probably an unforeseen problem with the thick glass on flat CRTs. A way to fix this problem would be to color the back of the white bezel black so the reflected light is minimal.

pretty interesting TomY! well, you learn new things every day. i thought it was an inherent defect with the monitors but that was hard for me to swallow after having paid absurd amt. of $$$ to sony for the g400. pretty cool analysis and supporting proof. i am at work and don't have the monitor in front of me right now but will definately expreiment that way when i get back home. thanks again!

scientific logic and experimentation rocks!

I have a Matrox G400 Max and I get ever so slight ghosting with all monitors with Sony FD Triniron screens (Sony G500, KDS monitors, etc)

How serious are the ghosting effects that all of you see? Mine is mostly apparent when I'm browsing/posting in the Anandtech forums. It's really odd, but I don't see any ghosting on the arstechnica site (unless I'm not looking in the right place)

I did notice that when I played around with the Mitsubishi 2040u that I did not get any sort of ghosting effect, but with the Sony and KDS monitors I can still see this very slight effect when I type up this post.

I just placed an order for a set of UltraSpec cables, which, according to sharkeeper in this post:

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=27&threadid=192812

fixes those slight ghosting issues that I experience. For his sake (heh 🙂) I hope that's true, or else I'll be out shipping charges, time, and be even more frustrated. 🙁

I only get the ghosting that I described earlier (white/black near the corners), I don't get any ghosting other than that.
Howeverm, when my monitor heats up way past the warm up temp, the screen goes fuzzy like instantly. It is fixed by turning off the monitor and turning it back on. It is annoying tho, when I make sure it isn't my vid card (Matrox G400) I am going to take it into the Sony Repair Facility a coupla miles away from my house. Luckilty this Sony G400 comes with a 3 year parts/labor warranty.

TomY:

Make sure they do good repairs on it. If they don't (like most people have claimed) your monitor will come back with more problems than before. Not to scare you, but more to warn you. Be wary of their service.

Thanks for the warning. I've had experience with Sony repair facilities before and I know exactly what those people are talking about. Try having a Sony XBR repaired before the guys at the facility even know what it is.

I guess it is an inherent display problem with Trinitron screens.

Just tried the new GeForce II (Prophet 2 64mb) replacement that I got and it is still just as bad. Not only that, but the display quivers a tad and the ghosting is horrible.

I will try the new UltraSpec cable as soon as I receive it. If it still doesn't work this card goes back. I get some weird corruptions here and there too, when I move my mouse around.
