gits was good. the second one was quite confusing. i think i need to see it again to understand it better. however, the second one had the best animation i've ever seen.

Shirow is a bit of a luddite which makes it all ironic.

I don't see it as ironic. I think that it's pretty clear in the movies that he sees us heading down a very bad path if we embrace technology so strongly.

The moral and philosophical implications of ?cyberization? (as I think it is described in the films) really seem to be the foundation of GITS.

As always when philosophy enters into the mix, there far more questions than answers.

while it's true that the movies discuss the philosophy of "cyberization" in a way that leaves many questions open, i've also thought that shirow definitely shows negative effects, which makes it not surprising that someone now says that he's a luddite.

If I had to use a word to describe my impression it would be: Cautionary.

A warning that choices have their consequences and that they should be carefully considered.

I think the strongest message out of the GITS movies/series is that the problems we have today will not be solved by advances in technologies alone, rather they will mutate and exist in their own form in the future.

The Matrix got a lot of inspiration from the original GITS movie. I mean just look at the opening scenes for example.

The GITS movies have a few of the anime cliches that some people dislike, but overall it's a good movie. If you are looking for deep philosophy science fiction, it's not all that great, but decent. If you are looking for good action and nice atmosphere, it's worth checking out. The 2nd movie had some 3d animations that were distracting but otherwise was good.

The TV series is a mixed bag. Some episodes are excellent and some are decent.

Overall the whole franchise is definitely a bit more appealing to mainstream moviegoers than most anime. I'd say it's worth a shot. If you see the 2nd movie try to get the one with subtitles and not the one with only close captions.

I loved this movie, but I didn't like the second one. The first though, is one of my all time favs. The series was pretty stupid too, I've seen maybe 2-3 episodes.

Some of them are good. You might consider giving it another shot. There is a running story about a person/entity/myth called the laughing man which is really well done. Tachikoma episodes are sometimes good as well.
