Ghost image > 4gigs and cant fit on single dvd. What useless system stuff can i remove?

i have winxp sp3, and the only major app is Offce 2007 (full install). but my c:\ drive takes up 11gigs. ghost compresses it to 4.8gigs. (dvd only fits 4.7gigs).

before i rebooted to dos to ghost, i emptied recycle bin, and temp files. i also reduced system restore to the minimum 200megs.

so whats taking up soooo much space? and what can i get rid of?

yea turn off hibernation during ghost.
and hotfixes
i've done backups of clean images of xp3, it should be way less than 4gb.
and compress the image.
compression is nothin for todays processors
this is a clean install right? using windows leads to loads of cr@p files.

yup, clean install winxp, office 2007, and some minor stuff like avira antivirus, adaware, adobe reader, k-lite video codecs, winamp, etc.

i've installed all the hotfixes 🙁
guess i can uninstall all of them

Don't worry about the hotfixes, turn off System Restore. Once that's turned off, it will remove all the restore points which take up an ass load of space. That's what's taking up all your space.

If that fails, get a dual layer DVD. 😉

turn off system restore (completely), turn off hibernation, delete NT_Unistall folders. My xp sp3 backup is like 4gb max with vlc, foobar, nero, photoshop, audition, pidgin, and other essentials.

eh...still not sure why your install got so big.
but in any case all image programs can span discs😛 you just have to set it when making the image

In case you didn't know, if you right-click a folder in Windows Explorer, and click Properties, it will add up the total size of the data in that folder. If you like the command line, DU can do it for many folders at once.

I can't find what Norton's compression algorithm is, but maybe using UPX on some executables would make the image very slightly smaller.

use WinDir to see whats taking up all your space. Its another one that just shows different color blocks but forgot the name of it.
