So what I have is the following

1. Ghost Image of old XP Laptop Drive that holds about 25 gigs of info, but has a "size" of 60 gigs listed on its info.

2. New Laptop Hard Drive that is 40gb

I want to ghost the old image onto the new drive, but it is giving me errors because of the size differentials. I ended up doing a single drive restore, but the machine will not start up. It also gave me an error saying that there was no more space to write to (I am assuming because it kept trying to write the empty data onto the smaller drive).

Is there a way to change the Image info so that it is a 40gb partition or something? I no longer have the original notebook drive, but can browse through the image at ease with 9.0's image browser

Odd - Drive Image and Acronis both will adjust when restoring to a smaller partition size as long as it is big enough to hold the non-empty part of the image.

I don't have Ghost 9 here, you might make sure you aren't clicking past some option to adjust, and you might also see what the Symantec knowledge base / support area says.

Only the size of the data should matter. Is the new drive just one large partition?

Yes, the drive is one partition (it is a dell 40gb). Would it help if I format the destination drive first (i thought Ghost would do that for me....)?

What actually ended up happening is Ghost really f'ed up my external drive (erased the file structure) so now I am actually trying to recover my image from the RAW data so I can try this again. I won't be using ghost again.

Would you recommend "restoring original MBR" when it asks?
