I couldn't take it anymore.

The high pitched whine on my radeon 8500 was driving me up the wall.
I tried to buy a quieter replacement fan, but DOH. it was a few millimeters too big for the proprietary ATi heatsink. furthermore, i can't get the ati heatsink off, so i can't attach any thing else on that thing.

what to do?

1. Stock HSF. Radeon 8500LE (Plus RAM sinks)
2. Stock fan removed.
3. 80mm fan modded to 7volts.

what's that yellow thing?
no that's not a rubber band... that's a custom made positioning chassis.

does anyone think that this is a bad idea?

the only thing i can think of is that the rubber bands might melt off while playing a game, especially since it's going in between the teeth of the agp slot thing.

The bands shouldnt melt, and that fan should be fine.

Albeit a strange graphics cooler, it will probably be silent, and give better airflow than the original stock fan.

Either way, the only reason people wouldnt do this normally, is due to the fact that fan will remove a pci slot from your machine, not to mention look incredibley bad :p

If i were you, i would try to find another way of attaching the fan though, perhaps glue?

sugarkang,

If you want to get the stock HS off that card, try putting the card in the freezer for about 15 mins or so. That baby should pop off pretty easy then

I used to have a setup like that, but used zip ties to hold the fan to the card.
The fan was actually floating like 1/2" an inch below the card, it worked pretty well.

i don't really see a need to do anything.
i've OCed to 290mhz on the core, and it's totally fine.

i'm not going to spend $30 on cooling when the card is barely worth that much now.

it was fine before, and it's fine now. it's just quieter now. bigger fan, lower rpms, more air flow.
the so-called mod was just to get me through until i get a 9800pro in march/april like plenty of other people.

Don't use rubber bands, i've done that before. It will work for about a month or two, but then from the heat and air movement through the case they will dryrot quickly and break, it sucks when the fan is spinning and it happens inside your case. Use zip ties or the like as mentioned above.

Good mod there.
You might want to consider sticking a U1 HS to the card in place of the stock HS.

Buts it bares no resemblance to a VGA Silencer. For a start the VGA Silencer is one massive HS, and its expels air from the case.
So a bit of a false thread title!:)
