Ghetto Fan Noise Dampener

I wanted to purchase these fan noise dampeners Link

But checking around for a couple of days, couldn't seem to find anywhere with free or cheap shipping. So I took a trip down to the local Ace Hardware and found this: Link for $4.99 + tax.

Two 6" squares of 1/8" and 1/16" thickness.

I used the 1/8" piece for a 92mm fan and the 1/16" piece for a 80mm fan.

I used a standard fan grill to trace the outline with a metal scribe then cut it out with scissors. I used a couple of dots of super glue to stick it to the fan and let it set up. Meanwhile I cut out some small "washers" to put between the case and metal grill. I screwed the fan back into the case....

The end result was pleasing and most of the case resonance from the fans disappeared. Black rubber definately would of looked better, but I didn't see any.

Right on, great post! I knew there had to be a cheap alternative to those overpriced fan silencers. Grommets would serve the same purpose, but this lets you keep your original fan screws.

Grommets also raise the fan away from the case which can decrease cooling efficiency.

I actually tried rubber washers that were about 1/4" high. They weren't soft enough to stop the resonance. I've also seen many places pass off rubber washers as grommets. They definately aren't the same thing.

Great idea. You should`ve posted it a couple months ago, I could`ve saved 60 bucks.

Sorry, I've been using a Dell for 18 months up to a couple of weeks ago. Those things are too quiet...
