I have recently run into some very frustrating and debilatating PC problems. My system is MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum, 2x512 cheap 3200 ddr ram, Connect3d x800xl, Antec 420 truepower PSU.

Well heres my story from the begining, i recently installed "Prince of Persia: 2 Thrones" and heres where my problems start. My pc plays the game fine and well but after about 2 hours of play or so my PC locks up, my entire screen screen glitches and turns white with staticy colored lines and the PC shuts off after about 15 secs in this glitchy state. I think nothing of it and reboot and go on with my day. In the following week as i near the games end the glitches and lockups become more frequent and happen especially when i alt tab. I think to my self it could be my drivers but its still not a big deal since these strange "white screen colored line glitches" only happen in prince of persia and do not occur elsewhere or any other game or program. About five days after the initial installation the game, with me nearing the games end, the game pretty much becomes unplayable, about every 5-20 mins in the game my screen turns white with staticly colored lines and i lose power to my system. I decide to do some research on the game and errors associated with it, upon researching the game I found out the game comes with starforce. After doing some backround research i imediately delete Prince of Persia and follow this websites info to completely removing starforce from my system. http://www.glop.org/starforce/remove.php

But heres where it starts getting weird after removing Prince of Persia and starforce i start getting the "White Screen with staticy colored lines comp shutdown error" outside of the game. At first its minimal but completely disruptive and soon my system crashes in this manner for everything and very frequently(from 5 min to 2 hours upon fresh reboot). I think it might be the drivers and download new catalyst 7.2 drivers. My system still crashes in this manner. I get omega drivers based on catalyst 5.7 my system still crashes in this manner, I then revert to my previous drivers of 5.6 of before installing of prince of persia but my comp still crashes in this manner.

Now i dont know what to do. The things I think that this problem can be attributed to is Memory, Gfx, PSU, or drivers. I havent done memtest yet(I dont have a floppy and have no blankcds to make a bootable) and Im pretty sure my memory sticks are fine. Gfx to me seems to me to be unlikely because everything was fine before this week and the installation of Prince of Persia and I can even get through a cycle or 2 of 3dmark benchmarking. PSU is about 4 years old but the voltage on the rails seem stable and it is an antec truepower. My temperatures for everything are in teh 28-39 range and all my fan speeds seem stable. I dont know what the problem can be, but im leaning toward bad PSU. What do you guys thiink? I dont have any spare parts lying around to test but does PSU seem most likely to be the problem? Being in college i don't have much money and only can afford to shell out about 100 dollars in repairs so I want to pinpoint the problem as accurately as possible before i empty my wallet.

Heres a little bit more detail on my problem: The white screen with glitchy staticy colored lines, happens mostly during things that require 3daccelaration(like games or 3d animation) but it is not limited to that, it has happened when browsing the net or in word as well but seems to happen much less. When the crash happens my screen flickers for a second and if i have somethign like itunes on it still plays the song being played during the crash normaly till my pc powers off. My Pc usually stays in the Glitchy state for about 15 secs before it loses power and everything goes black on my screen and my system. After a crash like this i have to unplug the power cable and restart the psu before my system can even turn on again(the power switch doesn't work if i dont do this). Usually then my PC reboots fine but when it should be at the Windows Login screen it glitches white with colored lines again. I usually then have to unplug the power and let it rest for a minute before it reboots normally again after the intial crash and usually around 1 or 2 windows login crashes.

sorry if theres any errors in grammer, its 5:25 am(studying for an organic chem exam) and my head isnt that clear. So if anythings needs clarification plz dont hesitate to ask.

thanks in advance

How can you be study for a chem exam and have problems playing Prince of Persia? :p

This is almost a daily post here at AnandTech. If your Anwrech 420TP is over three years old(warranty), open it up and under the harness find vented, bulging Fuhjyyu capacitors.
If it is two years old, try looking through the intake grill for them. Then RMA it.
Never buy another Antec PSU. The best cheap 400W PSU would be the Enhance ENP-5140GH. You will find a review at http://www.jonnyguru.com/
Read http://www.badcaps.net/faq/ then read http://www.badcaps.net/Ident/
Now inspect the motherboard.

ahhh thx for the input, ill look into it more next week after my exams. But is there any danger if i keep using my current PSU till i get a new one, is there a chance it will damage my other parts as well with these crashes? the Enhance ENP-5140GH seems pretty decent, i did some searching and the price ranges from 50 to about 150. Its a shame I always heard antec had quality psus, i got this one for the first system i built about 5 years ago and shelled out 150 or so for it and thought i could last me since my systems are pretty simple, but looking back my first system had some stragne reboot problems as well i never really looked into it but it could of been the psu then 2.

Can it kill other hardware? Didn't you read the faq at badcaps? It states that crappy PSU current can drive board n' card caps into a short service life.

http://www.theflyingpenguin.com/ > My Blog > 09/17/05, half way down the page. Yes a PSU's 5V spikes at boot can/will kill HDDs. Hope you do back-ups. :)

Can you keep using it? Sure! I don't care. But if were me this issue would not have had a chance to develope after the strange behavior in the first system.

Well i just got home, and opened my PSU and there seems to be no bulging or leaky capcitors. Do the signs of my monitor going into Glitchy line mode common for this sort of problem? Can my caciptors be bad even if they dont show signs?

Edit: Nm i found alot of yellow residue under one of 2 bulky capcitors its the PSU thx for all the help guys. I just ordered a Enhance ENP-5140GH (rev 2.2) power supply from ewiz for 56 bucks =D great deal

but one thing bugs me. Whats the difference between http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?p=PS-E5140GH&c=fr and http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?p=PS-E5140GH&c=? the 2 pages seem to have the same product but one has =fr and theres like a dollar difference and when u click check out they add [fr] in front of ur oder? does fr mean froggle? since searched it there?
