GFX card upgrade: 6600/GT on a (4x AGP MOBO)

Hello all,

Wend i put together my system back in 1998, I put allot of love and money into my system, only the latest and greatest was bought and my system has been running since with high colors, i could run pretty much any application/game for the last 6 years, but now with the DX9 games, shader model 3.0, etc... i find myself in need of a new GFX card, i was thinking in a 6600GP (AGP card) , i would like to know a few things:

Can i upgrade my Asus V7700 Geforce2 Pro card to a (TO be defined brand) GeForce 6600GT card?

My MoBo Abit KG7-RAID only has 4x AGP slot, can i run a 8x card on it?
(I can feed it power i have a good PSU)

If yes. What brand should i get ASUS does not make a AGP version of the 66000GT, (and if they did it would be expensive). I was thinking maybe XFX, but i have no experience with that brand.

Should i get a 128Mb or 256Mb version, and what is the difference in terms of performance with a slower AGP Slot?

Finally, does anyone have a similar experience, upgrading from an old card to a new using an old (4x AGP slot)?

Thanks for your time and any anwsers will be much appreciated.

P.S: I only want to upgrade my GFX Card, and i don't want to spend more than $200(+-20)

agp 8x is backwards compatible with agp 4x, so it should work ok.

agp 3.0 (8x) need only 0.8v to work,should work at agp 4x fine (1.5v) but not at agp 8x speed.

Curious what CPU are you running and how much memory?

Yeah I'm going to take a wild guess and say your CPU and memory is just as old as that graphics card(read: ancient), so I'm curious too. You realize that video card would be a waste of money if it's completely bottlenecked by the rest of your machine?

All AGP cards run at 3.3V supply. Just to be clear. It is the signaling voltages that are different. 3.3V for 1X/2X, 1.5V for 4X, and .8V for 8X. A lot of people read that the voltage to their AGP slot is 3.3V and think that means something regarding the AGP speed.

AGP 4X is not any slower than AGP 8X.

I recommend a 9800pro for that board.
