gforce4 4200 vs 4600 vs 4800... same chip ?

Well, i'm thinking of buying one of those beasts, and i'm pretty sure that the 4600 is just an underclocked 4800, correct me if if wrong.

And if that is a correct assumption, would the 4200 also be a underclocked 4800/4600 ?
or are there more changes under the hood such as changed pipelines and other stuff ?

If the 4200 is the same chip as the 4800 i might just get one of those and scare them up quite a bit... (yes, overclock it)

only differance is clockspeeds, certain 4200s have 8x agp as well

Time might have messed up my memory but I was under the impression that there is no difference between the chips on the Ti 4200 thru Ti 4600. The Ti 4800 and 4600 should be the same cards except the 4800 is an AGP 8x. There is a lot of difference between the 4200 and the 4600 in many cases, as the boards for the 4200 themselves can be very different, that and the chips for the faster 4400 and 4600 parts are picked to make sure that they can run at their faster speeds, overclocking a 4200 to a 4600 isn't a guaranteed success but if you can do it the performance should be the same.

4200 core/mem? 250/500
4600 core/mem? 275/550
4800 core/mem? 300/600


Edit: just found them, are they accurate ?


Seems like it would be wiser to get a 4600 and oc that to 4800 speeds, but the cost will dictate what card i get i'm afraid

almost:

4200 core/mem 250/500
4400 core/mem 275/550 (discontinued)
4600 core/mem 300/650
4800 core/mem 300/650 (AGP 8x)

And they are all the same NV25 core, the 4200 has every tansistor that the 4600 has.

I'll add a little bit of info. I see the 4800SE and 4800 are becoming popular, so I'll explain it a little bit.

There are now 8x versions of all the cards, and the naming convention is pretty weird.


First I'll list the 4x version, and then I'll list what the 8x version is called:

AGP 4x.......AGP 8x
---------------------------
Ti4200....... Ti4200 w/8x

Ti4400....... Ti4800SE

Ti4600....... Ti4800

4800s are no better than 4600s, there the same card, except for the almost meaningless agp 8x. Get whichever is cheaper.

Yes, the 4800 is the 8x version of the 4600, although I wouldn't say that it's "better" since 8x doesn't do much.

The 4800's are not priced lower than the 4600's. You're probably seeing the 4800SE's, which are 4400's with 8x.

If you look on pricewatch, it's listed under "4800", but when you click on the link you'll see that they're actually selling 4800SE's, not true 4800's.

Yup. In fact the 4800SE are often clocked LOWER than the 4400 were and since AGP8x is meaningless for these cards it is SLOWER and WORSE than a GF4TI4400. TBH you should only really consider a GF4TI4200 preferably with 128MB and ideally a 4200-8X version which uses slightly higher clocks too. Otherwise the 4200 cards using the longer 4600 type PCB and BGA RAM are as good as GF4TI4600/4800 with a little o/c'ing so also consider those. Of course none of these come anywhere close to a Rad9500PRO in ANY respect and that's before the 9500PRO o/c's to 9700nonPRO speeds, if you want more than a GF4TI4200 can offer I suggest you look to an ATI solution.
