GF4 MX440 vs 440SE

Could anyone tell me what the difference is, please? The price is about the same on both cards...

The SE version is slightly neutered compared to the normal MX440. I don't recall the actual differences between them, could just be clock speed but I'm not sure.

You don't want a GeForce4-MX 4x0. No pixel shaders and only 2 pixel pipelines compared to the slightly more expensive GeForce4-Ti4200 which has 4 and has pixel shading goodness!🙂

Perhaps he only plays DX7 and older games, and have no use for the extra speed and features? Or perhaps he has a strict budget that won't fit a GF4 Ti4200?

440 SE should be somewhere between 420 and 440,
however you can find SDR version, which imho is nowhere between 420 and 440 more like
a bit better that GF2 MX200.
I bought it as minor upgrade to MX400, but it's even worse...

Actually I'm buying it as a replacement to my old GF2 Ti64 (whose performance I was 100% satisfied with, it just started picking up some interference from some unknown source or something, and it seems like some perfectly working cards are resistant to it and some are not), actually i'm pleasantly surprised with its performance as I could even play C&C generals getting good frame rates around 30 fps, plus unlike a Ti4200 my power supply can handle it, and the price is like less than half of a Ti4200.

The seller screwed up my order though, and instead of an OEM 440 i got a retail 440SE, and I'm contemplating whether I should exchange it or not 🙂

dont let these guys rain on your parade, i bought an mx440 for my father and it has been a great card, running RTCW, MOHAA, and jedi knight 2 at full detail and high resolution

I agree. Running one in my son's machine and really don't have any gripes. Sure it isn't the fastest card ever made, but for the $$ it works for me.

I have a golden sample GF4 mx 440 with 3.3ns ddr and it does 315/620 no sweat and pulls 8000 in 3dmark without even running the nature scene...atually score close to my radeon 8500le did at default 250/500 in the first 3 tests...I am sure it can play most games period.

Screwface, not everybody plays games and needs all that 3d rendering power....The gf4 mx cards are a nice 2d card for dvd playback and decent 3d visuals...plus the fact is the card is by nature cheaper so one can afford to get dual monitor output, tv-out and VIVO options and still be cheaper then the ti4200 without all of those options...

I had a mx440 pci, a good card definately and for the price almost unbeatable. I would perhaps consider the rad9000 as well. the main difference between the 440 and the 440SE is that it can use SDR memory (but not always) and has slower core speeds.

I have a crusade going today about "lite" videocard versions.

I've had a Gainward GF4 MX440 in my 2nd computer for about a year and it's never failed to run any of my games smoothly which is impressive for a video card costing just abit more than a new game. The Radeon 9000 is a good option also and it's performance at higher resolutions is usually better than the GF4 MX440.

There is nothing wrong with lite versions of video cards for people who are infrequent gamers because what's the point in spending over £100 on a video card if you willn't be using it's features.

Actually what do you class as a "lite" video card? What about the Radeon 9500 for example?
