I currently have a gf4 mx 440. I was wondering if it would be worth it to get a gf3 ti 500? Is a gf3 ti 500 noticeably faster than a gf4 mx 440?

I'm sure you would notice a difference. How much depends on the rest of your setup and what games you run. Check out the massive video card roundup at Toms Hardware for the numbers.

I would question why you would want to do this though. If you have a line on a ultra cheap Ti500, maybe. But IMO, it's not worth shelling out the going rate for a card that's getting long in the tooth. Especially when your card is not that much worse. Again, all depending on the games you play.

That said, I just picked up a Radeon 8500le (similar performance to the Ti500) recently. But I was upgrading from an original Geforce 2mx. More of a difference. Even still, I was mightily tempted to wait for the Radeon 9600 to come out and bring down prices at the midrange. Hasn't happened yet.

Well, I was thinking of a trade-in. I was going to trade in a cpu for the gf3 ti 500. What card would you recommend is good for playing something like Splinter Cell? I dont want to spend more than $125 if I dont have to.

Get the $90 GF4 ti4200 deal at bestbuy. There's a thread about it in the hot deals section.

To answer your question (and if you haven't already visited Jay's link) yes, it is significantly faster than the gf4 mx 440. However, as some have mentioned, for a mere $30 more than a TI500, you could acquire a very nice TI4200 128mb ddr w/8x capabilities. That card is a similar amount faster than the TI500 as the TI500 is faster than the mx 440.

It should also be noted that splinter cell (based on the Unreal 2 engine) is among the biggest VPU hogs in the market today. Having said that, i'm sure the TI500 will be able to run it, just not at anywhere near maxed settings. The Ti4200 mentioned above can run a playable splinter cell with maxed out settings @ 1024x768
Of course, this depends also on your CPU and ram ;)

Anyway, there's my spiel on the matter :)

I had a GF4 MX440 in my 3 year olds pc. 3dmark2001SE ~5000. Bought him the $90 4200 at Best Buy, 3dmark2001 SE ~9200. That is a BIG upgrade for very little money.
