gf2 pro/ultra or radeon

I am building a new pc with a 1ghz T-bird Abit mobo and am not sure which video card would be best. I only need video card so I don't really want to wait around 'til summer for new nv20 to complete system. Frame rate is somewhat important because of upcoming games but a pretty picture is a plus? Any help would be appreciated.

The question you need to ask yourself is "How much am I willing to spend?"

If you got the money, then get a GeForce 2 Ultra because it is AWESOME.

That being said any of the three cards you mentioned will do fine.

The NV20 is supposed to be released at the end of February/start of March. It isn't that much longer.

get a cheap one just to be a filler in your system right now, and if you have the money, splurge for the nv20 when it comes out, you'll be mad at your crappy vid card for a little over a month, but after that you'll be tahkning y ourself that you got in on the new technology in the nv20

Frames are only somewhat important, and you don't want to wait for the nv20, then don't get the ultra.

For pure raw FPS, get the GF2 Ultra. For better quality especially in 2D, get the Radeon. Though you can mod your GF2 Ultra to remove the RFI Filter which in effect improve particularly 2D image quality.

Here is a link/poll that might be of interest to users who are shopping for their next video graphics card. It asks former users who owned GeForce2 products for the reasons why they changed allegiances to Radeon. Another similar link talks above moving over from 3Dfx.
Both make for interesting reading and cover most of the key differences.

NV20 should be hitting retailers in quantities in April at the latest, though pricing still hasn't been firmly set from what I have seen.

Tough choice overall to make between the three boards. Between the GF2 and Radeon I would go Radeon, but the GF2 Pro and Ultra are now quite reasonable in price, the Ultra going for under $350 at some places, and there is a very large performance rift there. If I was buying right now(which I'm not because the NV20 is very close) I'd go Ultra, though I think you will be very happy with any of the three you go with.

On the topic of that poll-

IBMer is NOT, never has been, and from what I know of him never will be a nVidiot in any way shape or form. To insinuate so in the discussion thread over there is quite frankly either zealotry or intentional antaginization(which I've been known to do, particularly with IBMer and Robo😉).

No surprise at that forum, truly the nastiest I have ever seen(though there are a few good guys who do post over there). I wouldn't trust a thing you heard over there if you are looking at a purchasing choice, just as I would advise you to not listen to people on a nVidia board about the same type of choice.

I would say don't go with the radeon because of problems with certain games and not that great performance. the image quality people talk about probably isn't noticeable to the average joe anyways.

the ultra is expensive right now and I myself am waiting for the nv20 which I think you should do. so buy a real cheapo video card until then, buy an nv20 then keep it for atleast a year. Just be patient until they come out or your kind of wasting your money right now.
