GF100 and Unigine Heaven DX11 benchmark pic

I thought we already determined that if you run this benchmark without tessellation then the stairs end up looking like a slide instead of actual steps.

Now someone tell me if I am crazy but don't the stairs in this bench photo look like a slide?

Yes, they look like a slide. Could be several things, although I certainly wouldn't rule out a driver bug(there are some.... interesting elements with the Unigine bench atm).

Definitely tessellation going on there. Note that if you blow the picture up, there is definitely some definition in the steps and how it is shadowed. Might just be the angle of the image. Also note the spines on the dragon's neck and how it protrudes. The dragon without tessellation has textures that simulate the spines but don't actually protrude if I recall correctly. Also note the bottom right corner post. It shows curvature from tessellation and not the flat blocky structure that we see in images without tessellation.

Basically look at the this dragon image and these stairs to illustrate what I was looking for. Note the spines on the dragon's neck. The other thing is how the steps are shadowed and there is more definition in the blocks/posts to the right of the steps with tessellation on.

Again, I think it's just the angle of the image as well as the size of it that makes it harder to see.

Sorry guys, I'm not up to date on all the names... what is the GF100? I assume it's a part without tessellation? Doing a quick search, it looked like it was a part related to Fermi? Doesn't Fermi have tessellation as it's a DX11 part? Sorry, I'm sure I'm way off on what it is. Thanks.

GF100 is the GeForce part that has a lot in common with Fermi. Fermi is Teslas successor, GF100 is the GTX285s successor.

Yeah I see it now with the spines on the dragon, both the neck/head and the tail you can clearly see the GF100 pic has the spines whereas they would be absent if tesselation were not being used.

If it is, the answer is that I don't. I made a thread because BSN had something about GF100, if the info was irrelevant to the community here then the thread would receive no responses and would/will subside off the first page as confirmation of such.

The question I asked in the OP was just to get a sanity check on whether or not my eyes were deceiving me. Turned out they were, all the more reason to be glad I asked for a sanity check and all the more reason to be glad there are folks in this community who care to provide them when requested.

But regardless whether the answer was going to turn out that I did care or I didn't care, why do you care what my answer would have been?

I don't think they copy of each other, so they are the inventors.

Keep in mind that video card existed before those names.

IIRC, the term GPU really came to prominence with the release of the original GeForce, due to the hardware T&L moving a tremendous amount of visual processing off of the CPU and onto the video chip. Aside from the first credible 3d acceleration with the Voodoo1 and Rendition Verite, this was the largest leap in PC 3d graphics capability that I can think of. ATI of course rapidly responded with the excellent Radeon, and it's been back-and-forth ever since.

I think GPU has become such a standard accepted name that I have no problem using it in generic terms, totally unattached to brand. I never use the term VPU.

yep, kinda like saying kleenex or clorox or google...all are trademark names of specific products sold by specific companies, but we pretty much use the marketing names as synonymous with any product that is in the same market category. GPU is like that, as is CPU.

Even tho supply is slow because of yields . They are still selling thousands of cards every weak and demand has not softened. So beings ferma isn't a gpu but a GPCPU. The proper way to adderess the King is in his own tongue! Long live the VPU Viva the VPU !! ye! haw!
