So she's a big fan of the "Detroit Red Wings." We live in NYC, so I checked to see if they would be playing any games here and they're not :-/ So now she wants to take a trip to either Detroit for any of their home games or to Philadelphia when they play whatever team Phil. has. I don't have a car, so whichever place we go to, we'll have to take mass transit. What town would provide us with a decent trip? Not sure how I got the impression that Detroit was a hellhole, but that's what comes to mind when I think of Detroit. I'm thinking this trip might cost $300-500 at least (including tickets). I'm not sure though cause I'm not a big traveler and don't know the prices of hockey tickets.

Notes:
1) Philadelphia or Detroit for a hockey game?
2) What town is better? (subjective, I know)
3) Approx. how much will I spend?

edit: She wants to go this upcoming season because her 2 favorite players are retiring afterward.

Hand in your "man card."
Come to Philly - much better than Detroit.
Leave your Detroit jersey at home if you know what's good for you.

As far as I know, she doesn't own a jersey :)
And I don't either since the only thing I know about hockey is that Wayne Gretzky(sp) was a big deal once.

Go to philly on the train, its nice and relaxing. Philly is a nice city, as long as you know where to go. I don't remember what it costs for a train, but check amtrak.com for prices. Only takes a few hours to get there, then take public trans around the city. Have fun.

do they play boston? Isnt there a new jersey team as well? you could see if there are games with them or with boston even as well. what about renting a car for a day instead of mass transit?

Do philly. Jump on the train at Penn station, get off at 30th st (in PhillY), hop a cab to the (almost new) stadium, hop cab back to 30th st, jump on train, go home.

If she's a big Detroit fan, then Philly's probably not gonna give her the same Hockeytown experience. I'd say go to Detroit, just don't wander around after dark, stay in a hotel in the suburbs or something, and hang out around the suburbs at night. (Downtown Birmingham is a nice place at night, it's where the Lakers stayed when they were here last year)

PS Turn in your man card (you're complaining that your GF wants to watch hockey rather than drag you shopping?????)

I wasn't aware that those cities had hockey teams. I just Googled NY hockey teams and checked the schedule. Thanks for the heads up though everyone, I'll check Boston and NJ.

:p She's also a baseball fan.

It's strange dating someone who's into some sports when you (the male) don't care about any aports. But I've taken her to a few Yankee games though. $8 beers :'(

In the new schedule is very baseball-like in that there are few cross-conference games. It's supposed to be to increase rivalries
