Honda CR-V, 2007 or 2008
It very comfortable, reliable, great gas mileage, and nice looking inside and out.

Your used accord/camry idea is a sound one, but if it's her money and money is not an issue, let her buy the car she likes. It really sounds like she wants to get rid of her current one anyway and this is a good 'excuse'.
BTW, since when do mid-sized SUVs include CR-Vs and RAV4s? Those are the mini-utes. A Murano is close to mid-sized but to me it will always just be a tall bubble car. Mid-sized SUVs are Grand Cherokees, Trailblazers, Highlanders, etc.
One other thing, I think people make too big a deal out of gas money. Do the math... unless you're a poor college student or someone doing 100 miles a day... you don't feel it much over the course of a year. Some people spend it on beer, some people spend it on the car they like.

That's what Big 3 used to think in late 90s when price of gasoline was less than $1.50/gallon, they laugh at Toyota/ Honda's Hybrid project.

Sorted by MSRP but use the tabs there and you can get better results. $20k will get you guys a nice compact SUV but don't forget the taxes, etc.

Are those actual rankings? Is so, that website is retarded. Not to mention, I've never heard of autos.com.

her dad sadly is unemployed and is near retirement age. Recently widowed as well. So in the absent of her mother, my gf has stepped up and taken care of the house hold.
Me personally I've said repeatedly either to buy him a decent $5k car and be done with it. Like a accord/camry 4cylinder no features. But this is the path SHE wants to go down.
I classify a Cx-7 as a truck for the most part.

They don't need to be registered as commercial vehicles in California
*grumbles at the extra $100 in taxes each year because of it*
