Credit cards can help BUILD quite a bit of credit. Just use them to buy things YOU NEED.
The problem that people have with CC"s is they don't understand the difference between WANTS and NEEDS.
I myself get them quite confused at times while in the hot deals forum but hey that's different!
She has a car right? She has to buy fuel for the car, does she grocery shop? Have her buy grocery's, understand?
It's good to try to start establishing credit while you are young, just learn how to be responsible, I see way too many people that are 24-27 that didn't take responsiblity for their actions when they were 18 and early 20's and have crapped themselves into the nether regions of crummy credit.
Don't let it happen to her!

That's the best advice I have seen in this thread.
Secured credit cards = an almost guaranteed approval.
After she has used the cc and made timely payments for 12 months, apply for a regular unsecured (CitiBank, Chase, Providian, Amex) and she will probably be approved.

Viper GTS's suggestion for secured credit cards is an excellent one. Be warned, however, that some institutions offering secured cards charge an unholy amount in fees. Shop around.
Also, I suggest applying for a department store credit card first. They usually have no annual fee, and are easier to get than a major credit card. Just make sure to pay them off in full each month, or the interest will screw you. Once you build a credit history, you can usually qualify for a major credit card. This is how I got my credit cards.
Based on lilcam's post, I would guess that his GF is fairly young, since she just opened her own (presumably first) checking account. As pointed out, it isn't lilcam's choice on when to apply, but he probably has some influence over her decision. The question you must ask is simple:
Is she responsible enough to use a credit card without sinking into unmanageable debt?

explain to me how a free loan every month, extra flexability, improved credit history, and extra purchase protection hurts you. if you're mature enough to handle a credit card, they are nothing but good. very few cards have annual fees these days, even for kids.
