If a person is using a cell phone to send text messages to another person with a cell phone, why not just use the damn phone and call the person?!?!? I don't get the point...

There are advantages to reading a message, than having to listen to one. There are also certain situations where texting is more convenient than trying to talk.

i certainly can't think of one (including the library/theatre examples listed above. that's what the vmail feature is for)

In addition to that; the person on the other end doesn't have to listen to the whiny-b!tching voice.

Seriously, it's like $5 a month for unlimited text messaging, just tell her to get it and stop whining.

That's quite a cell phone provider you have in your dream world.

what is this vmail thing?
having an internet plan on a phone can cost more then a txt message plan, so if that requires net access for vmail/email, then it'd be worthless in terms of cost.

vmail is "voice mail" that comes standard with cell phone plans. vmail isn't an internet plan on a phone. I was just saying voice mail on the phone is there for a reason ie when at a library or a movie theatre.

In some countries, each call is charged per minute and IMO that is way text messaging is so popular since it costs way less than making a call. Since in the US this is not the case, I completely agree with you.

When I contact people at work, I use text messages. When someone messages me, I can read and respond right away. If I call them, I have to get up, go to the break room, chekc the voice message, then return the call. Places where I'm unable to talk, such as during class or something, I can still communicate with people.

I also text or email at work. Its traceable and leaves a trail of what/when/who/why.

I have a friend that went through between 600 and 700 messages in one month combining incoming and outgoing both. It was a tasty extra $60 to cough up!
