Lately I've been plugging my phone into my charger at night, only to find that it's not charging b/c it's been unplugged from the wall. I asked my GF why she keeps unplugging my charger and she says it's to "save electricity." Now, I have no problem with conserving energy and trying to be more green, but the hypocricy is unbelievable here.

Examples:
- She routines leaves lights on all over the damn place. Sometimes it seems like she just turns everything on for the hell of it. I find the basement light on ALL THE TIME. I always end up walking around the house before bed turning lights off.
- She always leaves at least one light on downstairs at night to "prevent burglars from coming in the house." (<--Yet if I didn't walk around the house before bed and lock all the doors, they'd be able to walk right in)
- She doesn't unplug anything else (TV, radios, computers, etc etc)

I have looked it up and she is right, leaving your charger plugged in (without a phone on the other end) does use energy. But things like TVs, cable boxes, radios and so on use more.

BLAAAARGH!!!

That's enough to dump her right there. She's not sane or reasonable.

You could just give her a buck and say "there, I paid for all the eletricity this charger will ever use so leave it plugged in."

Eh probably not a battle you want to fight. Just get in the habit of plugging the charger in with your phone?

They now make power strips with a master plug. Basically, if the device plugged into the master is off, it shuts the power off to the rest of the strip. For example, you could plug your TV into the master (which would still draw power, even when off) and then plug your DVD player, cable box, Xbox, etc. into the rest of the strip. When you turn off the TV the power is cut to the other devices... While your TV still draws current, the other devices do not.

Oooooo that sounds interesting...

Here's what I did. I grabbed all of the rechargers and things which need to be plugged in, and plugged them into two outlet strips. When I'm not recharging something I just turn the whole strip off. If I need to recharge, I just turn it on. Works like a charm and saves electricity in the process.

Ever heard of phantom power? Some devices do it bad... I have a charger for a small radio that pulls a ton of juice all the time, so I unplug the wallwart from the wall.

Shit, I wish I could find a girl that gives 1 fscking iota about saving power, even if she is wrong. I could never get any of mine to stop 'secretly' messing with the thermostat or leaving lights on/windows open.

If it is an old charger it uses maybe one Watt when left plugged in, new ones (at least new Nokia ones) don't even register on my kill-a-watt when left plugged in.

Using a Kill-a-Watt, I discovered that none of my phone chargers use any electricity when not connected to my phone, so I leave them all plugged in.

1. Beat GF
2. Plug in charger
3. If charger unplugged, goto 1

Disclaimer: Please don't actually do this. This post was a weak-ass attempt at humour. I don't condone domestic violence unless it's absolutely necessary.

It varies depending on the adapter, but on average they only use like 120mW of power with no load connected. There are certainly worse offenders out there, such as TVs, or the lights she needlessly leaves on.

It's not about saving electricity. It's about controlling you.
Everyone knows this.

Buy a killawatt, show her how much the adapter uses, then plug her curling iron in it and show her how much that uses, and basically display to her that a single morning of her using the curling iron or blow dryer or w/e costs more then the charger plugged in for a whole week straight.

Adapters use very little power when idle.
