her obgyn called and left a message concerning her pap smear two weeks ago, didnt specify what but they dont call back unless there are abnormalities. Any women out there who have had abnormal results come back, would you post about it? :) The GF is a little scared right now of what it would be, she going crazy thinking she has cervical cancer.

or anyone who knows about these things?

thanks.

My g/f's came back abnormal once as well. The doctor told us that it could just be a bacterial problem and that she would have to be retested again in a couple weeks.

She went back and those results came back fine. It's not unheard of to have a "false positive".

it can also be caused by screwing too many people. nothing bad as far as the pap smear goes, but can show it as abnormal.

The truth of that statement, I don't know. But, I think that was in really poor taste. :disgust:

As far as your gf, does she already have an appointment to see the doc? If she doesn't, make sure she gets one or calls and talks to someone. I knew someone that's had abnormal results before, and they just keep track of it, and she's never had cancer. :) (And it wasn't from "screwing too many people" either. She'd only been with one man.)

Good luck.

EDIT:

Here's a link from a quick Google search. Link There's no pics, but there are diagrams. So, if I'm not supposed to post that, let me know. (Although, it's certainly far from sexual.)

Ouch!!!

Seriously though, don't get concerned until you get a second result.

Don't worry until after the retest, and obviously, call the doctor back to see what the message is about.

Sorry to hear that, but false positives are notorious as most labs are for sh*t.

Ps. Whats a "pap" ?

It could be any number of things. Don't get worried about it. Most likely just an infection.

The labs that evaluate the pap smears make the techs eval a lot of smears in a single day, if the 2nd one is abnormal, her doc will suggest a biopsy. Don't even start to worry till after the 2nd one is done & the results are back.

It is not all usual for a pap to come back abnormal, remember it's basically a screening test and the labs that process them do hundreds each day. I've had more than one myself and on repeat smear(which is usually looked at by somebody with more experience than the average lab tech) was found to be fine.

Just try to think positive thoughts togetjer till she goes back for the repeat,I'll be thinking of her !

Jeez you guys, you don't know what a pap smear is?

The above link is pretty good. Its short for a Papanicolau smear, named after the physician who routinely started doing them on women of childbearing age. Its a scraping of cells taken from the cervix while awake (!), and sent for examination under the microscope after staining. Its used to detect changes in the lining of the cervix which may be indicative of cervical cancer or general inflammatory changes.

Its not something to be taken lightly, its like taking a biopsy of a mole or a skin lesion to make sure theres no cancer.

A single abnormal cervical smear result is a relatively common occurrence, and for much of the time are not cause for concern (About 75% of low-grade abnormal smears revert to normal given time). What sometimes causes confusion is that smear results can come back as 'unsatisfactory' (the smear is unreadable), usually because of an infection - and a repeat is required in a few weeks: note that unsatisfactory does not mean abnormal.

After a single abnormal smear result, you should have an appointment for a repeat smear in a few weeks. If this is normal, then no follow-up over and above routine smears is required.

If smears are repeatedly abnormal, or if the initial smear is very abnormal, then referral should be made for 'colposcopy' (a procedure done by a gynaecologist at a hospital or clinic, which involves examining the cervix with a microscope). In some cases, a biopsy (taking of a tissue sample) can be done at the same time using local anaesthetic - this is the gold standard and provides definitve diagnosis.

thanks for the help guys, turns out she had traces of a yeast infection. :Q It'd be consistent with the (ahem) chunky discharge she has been having and painful irratation during sex....so...I dont think there's much to worry about.

You should know this-

Vaginal candidiasis (yeast infection) is not considered a sexually transmitted disease. However, 12 to 15% of men will develop symptoms such as itching and penile rash following sexual contact with an infected partner.

Ya know, I saw that, but ran through a checklist of symptoms and Im pretty sure that I dont have it. Im also circumsized, which I understand cuts down the risk for a male yeast infection substantially. However if he gets itchy, i'll doubletime it to the doctor-I've read its quite painful for men to have.

thanks! :)

You were having sex with your girlfriend when she had chunky discharges? Sometimes you just gotta say no!
