GF 6200 AGP -> GF 6600\GT AGP

I am thinking about doing the GF 6200 modded to a 6600\GT thing for an older machine, and my question(s) is as follows:

1.) First, is it even possible to do it with the AGP version, as I have read that it may not be, so if not, then let me know right off the bat.
2.) What card brand(s) would I have to use, for best chance of being successful.
3.) For getting a 6600GT, I would have to find one with DDR3, right?

Now, I was thinking of doing this one of 2 ways. First way is the simple way with RivaTuner, simply unlocking the extra pipes and OCing it. The second, is a more "permanent" way, via a BIOS flash, with a 6600\GT BIOS.

Which of the 2 ways would be the best, and yes, I do know, that it will void the warranty, but for $100? Its well worth the risk in my opinion. Thanks for the help, and please, no flaming.

I did it with my PCI-E card, I posted the results somewhere else. I basically was able to get almost a 3100 in 3DMark05 (overclocked and pipes unlocked).

1) I have read that it doesn't work. I have no idea why, it is possible that the stock of PCI-E chips are of higher quality for whatever reason. It's up to you, and I have also heard that it doesn't overclock well either both problems could be due to some bios related thing.

2) I've got a eVGA, and I have also communicated with someone with a Gigabyte that did it. Chances are that it's more due to the chip that you get than the card. But... I'd probably stick with one of the cards that uses very similar PCBs for the 6200 and for the 6600 NU. In all likelihood they would probably just want to produce nearly identical PCBs that are capable of nearly identical things for cost saving. I have also read that someone's 256 MB Chaintech didn't work and the 128 MB Chaintech uses a 64-bit bus so stay away from those. But as I said, I think it's more card to card dependant than it is from brand to brand.

3) There's no way to exactly get it to 6600 GT speeds since ALL 6200 boards use DDR not DDR3. You can overclock your ram a decent amount and maybe even v-mod it, but you'll probably never exceed 850 (GT ram is 1000+).

If you do it, good luck. It's an easy mod, but like overclocking your CPU it's possible you get the gimpiest CPU in the world that only does spec and no higher.

That's sorta what I'm looking for, however, I would much prefer something in English (no offense, but I can't read that, and I tried translating it with Firefox, and it wasn't pretty 😉 ). Anyone else know anything?

I've done it on the PCI-E like I said, it's easy. Just use Rivatuner, the process is exactly the same as for people that unlock 6800 NU's pipes. Look that up. If you need anymore info feel free to PM me.

Yeah, thats what I was going to try to do first, then possibly a BIOS flash.

OK, well, I guess I need to do some clearing up:

1.) Does the AGP version of the 6200 have the same NV43 GPU as the 6600s? I already know that the PCI-E 6200s (non TurboCache) have the same GPU, but I don't know whether the AGP versions do.
2.) Has anyone else had success doing this mod, as I know some have success with the 6800NU -> 6800GT\U.
3.) Are there any out there with DDR3, as I have seen that that is the only way to get (near) 6600GT clock speeds.

Thanks again, and I hope this clears things up a bit.

Just a quick update. I just installed my new Leadtek A6200 128 TD and I ran a couple of quick benchs.

3DMark2k3

5700LE (425/550) 3103
6200 (350/650) 4111

FarCry 1024/768 x 32bit, Max Quality

5700LE (425/550) 19.93fps
6200 (350/650) 32.18fps

1) It should be the NV43 as long it's not turbocache. If some company uses odd naming for that's NV43/44 other than the turbocache distinction there's nothing we can do to tell of course.
2) There are a million active threads across many forums about this topic. Do a search if you want more specific information.
3) No, I already said this in my first post. (Actually there is one that I've found with DDR3, but not available in the US, only in China)

You found a non-TC 6200 AGP, with GDDR3 onboard? Ok, spill the beans, please. 😛 (Because you never know, some of the bigger retailers/surplus sellers/importers like NewEgg or Compgeeks might get a shipment of those cards in, or could, if one asked them to stock them, perhaps.)

do a search for the "6200UP-8X CT" if you're interested in the DDR3 6200. I have no idea what brand that is, but the cost is about $150+ (converted). Doesn't seem worth it, for that price (remember about shipping) you'd be better off getting the 6600 GT.

Thanks. Yes, at that price... I would have to reconsider that one. Guess the cost for GDDR3 is a bit more than regular DDR. I think that the biggest performance increase would come about from unlocking the 4 additional pipes more than anything else.
