Gettting my first tattoo tomorrow

So tomorrow I am getting my first tattoo, I'm nineteen and about three years ago I lost a very close, much more of a best friend. He was like a brother to me and I miss him dearly, so after a lot of though I have decided to get a tattoo with a very meaningful quote.

"How lucky I am to have had a friend, so hard to say goodbye to."
I'll get his name put below it along with 1988-2003

I am going to have these words put over the top of a hollow cross between my shoulder blades but a little hight then direct center.

Any advice for me or tips? I was also wondering if anyone knew what a tattoo of this size and detail would cost?

UPDATE:

I just wanted to write a little response to people on here, I wasn't asking for your opinions. I do appreciate them, I like to hear the views of others, most of you have been question my reasoning. I didn't come to this decision spur of the moment, my friends passed away four years ago. He was the first guy I met when I moved to a new town, we were like brothers. I still remain very close to the rest of his family, the quote to me sums up exactly how I feel. I still deal with the pain of the loss to this day, the quote is also favored by his parents.

For those of you saying this is "gay" that shows a lot of your maturity. Is it wrong to say that I loved a guy like a brother? We were both there for each other is the few years that we knew one another, I lost him the summer before my junior year of HS, I have had a lot of time to think about this and came to this decision after a lot of thought. In the end the decision is left up to only me and thats it.

I would recommend you keep thoughts of him in your head in the form of memories, not etched on your body.

I am curious as to why you think this?

You might want to have the tattoo artist spell "say" correctly.

BTW-That's kind of gay.

A tattoo parlor around where I live starts at $35 for tattoo's. Depends where you get it done. My two were both designed by myself, not a preset one that the store had, but they were simple and cost me $40 each.

Just go in there and talk to them. Again, depends where it's done. The place I did 'em, which was where my friend got all his done, is a small place and is cheap. I'd venture around $50, since it's just text and black ink

i for one really respect what you're doing dude!

you should look around your area for a good tattoo studio and talk to the tattoo artist beforehand... explain to him what you want and how you want it done and have him sketch something for ya... if you haven't done any of this yet i recommend doin it before just going out and getting it!
its really exciting getting a tattoo specially the first one and i bet you can't wait to get it done... but you should hold off a day or so and talk to the guy to see how much it'll cost and to make sure you get exactly what you want... cause its forever! :)

anyway i think its an awesome gesture! good luck with that dude and post back some pics once its done!!

Let me ask you this. Hypothetically speaking, If the world were to end tomorrow and you were the last human being left alive on the planet, would you still tattoo yourself in memory of your deceased friend? I'm just trying to figure out what is motivating you to do this. Are you doing this because you think a tattoo is cool and therefore you now have a reason to ink yourself, or do you truly somehow want this tattoo to mean something special? I just think the best way of honoring your friend is to keep him alive in your memories, not etched in ink on your shoulder blade as a fashion statement. With all due respect, it's just a bit tacky IMHO. If you want to keep his memory alive in a tangible way, plant a tree in his name or something, but I wouldn't recommend a tattoo on your back.

Because in about ten years your potential spouse is going to look real funny at it and ask to have it removed.

I've never understood how a tattoo on a part of the body you can't even see helps you to remember someone.

Bottom line is this man, it's your body. If getting that tattoo helps you feel like you are remembering your friend, then do it. You didn't ask if anyone thought it would be tacky anyway. Tattoos like anything else can be tasteful or tacky. It's a personal decision and one I would however, caution you to think about if you get, it is permanent. Always better to wait, save up the money, get a design you really want from an established artist. Check out his/her work, draw out some of your own ideas. Then let them sketch out a few ideas for you, collaborate and go from there. The tattoo you describe, would cost max 100$ here in NC, saying that however...(personal opinion) I would get something more elaborate, better phrase.

at least $200, but i don't really hae an idea of the size. All three of my tatoos can be covered with a dollar bill, and they all cost about $100, with tip. I got these tatoos at 3 different parlors in 3 different states, so the prices are pretty regular.

Give some thought to losing the last "to".
"How lucky I am to have had a friend, so hard to say goodbye."

I think it's a wonderful idea and a wonderful tribute. I am thinking of getting a tatt in remembrance of my father who passed away 4 years ago.

I think it's an ok tribute but IMO, I don't like the place he's putting it.

OP, why don't you do an armband around your bicep with those words on the outside and his initials on the inside... or even just shorten it to ...so hard to say goodbye...
That way you cover yourslef from the misconception that you're gay.
...not that there's anything wrong with that.

I'm not a big fan of memorial tattoos generally... been thinking about getting my three kids baby feet prints on me somewhere...

Getting a tattoo always has very deep meaning for most who get them. I know mine do. Not sure on the price for you as I don't know your area and what the tattoo artists charge there. My Kat on the back of my neck is fairly large and cost me over 200 bucks. It is all in black ink though. Anything with color is going to take longer and cost you more.

Good luck to you, and I know you will love your tat when it is completed!
