getting video out of my sun ultra60

I'm just being dumb I think and forget something. I have a sun ultra60 and the vga monitor adapter, it boots fine except my monitor never gets a signal. It used to output video with this setup but its been a while since I've used it....

If its set with the serial port as the console would that explain my lack of video or something? I just want to install freebsd 5.3 😀

Good luck, last time I tried FreeBSD on sparc64 it wasn't exactly reliable.

It _should_ use the VGA if it's hooked up, you may need to have a keyboard plugged in as well though, it's been a while. You may have to boot it up in the serial console and set the console back to graphics if it's set for serial, as I said it's been a while since I touched the prom on my Ultras so I can't really remember.

You need a keyboard plugged in. If you booted without a keyboard, then tried with one you shouldn't have to make any changes.

Does your monitor support SUN's wacky resolutions? Are you using a 13w3 to vga adapter? Can you try it with a proper monitor (cheap adapters suck :|).

Yup have the keyboard, although no mouse plugged into it.....

The monitors a crap shoot. The cheap adapter has always worked on the displays in the racks in the server room but now its on my crappy 19" at home......

Nothinman I'm also a bit concerned about the reliability. I tried it with 5.1 I think and I'd rate it crappy. I'm hopeing the 5.3 release might help...

Everything I've heard has lead me to believe that FreeBSD should stick to i386. 😛

Ok, so the adapter is fine. I think no mouse might be an issue, so try and get a mouse. Also, try a different monitor. I had a crappy 19" that wouldn't work properly, but a couple good 17"s that would.

Cool I'll have to give it a shot after dinner....man I hate suns 😀

Any really sweet os recommendations? I hate Solaris. Perhaps its time I branch into other bsds? Or linux is the thing here? Or ebay for a good box for freebsd 😀

Why? Just run sid, full releases are good install points but with a package system that works as well as Debian's there's little reason to release.

How about so people can use something beyond Mozilla 1.0? 😛

I'll wait for sarge to become stable, then maybe it'll be worth it. If the sun hasn't burnt out by then. Meanwhile, I'll use an OS that's progressing. 😉

Running sid is more than worth it now, it's just as stable as any other system I've used and a helluva lot more convenient.

My Ultra 5 had two video outs, so you may need to look again to see if there is a second one from a compatible VGA adaptor onboard. Just an idea anyway.
