Getting Vaccinations at PETCO?

Has anyone gotten their dogs shots at their local PETCO? Mine are going to need their second round in the next few weeks and I was curious as to the differences between a vet and the folk at PETCO

No difference, except you might pay more at a Vet's office.

Cheaper going to Petco.

But some of the vaccinations you can even do yourself to save more money.

Depending on what state you live in, you can buy the shots yourself.
They are easy to give.

Many of the AG-centric retailers such as Quality Farm and Fleet or that other one I can't think of sell animal vaccines that you can buy without a license. We just ordered several dozen kanine vaccines (Distemper-Adenovirus Type 2-Parainfluenza-Parvovirus-Leptospira-Bordetella bronchoseptica) from an online Vet supply house (Vet America) because my mother rescues puppies and dogs from the pound and finds them homes.

Obviously you shouldn't just start giving your animals vaccines and injections unless you know what you're doing. But its not difficult to learn what is needed, when, and how to give it. We're lucky to have a good resource, my sister has been a Registered Vet Tech for 10 years.

I dunno, seems to be about the equivelant to taking your kid to a doctor at walmart for vaccinations.

You can get flu shots at Walmart when they offer them. Same diff.

Typically, veterinary technicians or DVMs are on-site giving the shots because, although its legal for a person to give their own animals vaccinations, it would probably run afoul of the law in most states for an unqualified person to offer the service of animal vaccinations for fee. At least here in California, pet and animal supply stores such as Petco offer vaccination clinics that are sponsored by an area veterinary clinic.

Yup, do it yourself. I've given shots to cats before, just wrap 'em up in a towel & leave their head & neck exposed.

They whine but they get over it.

Oh, and don't stick the needle in one side & out the other. My mom did that once. Stupid wiggling cat.
