We're still cracking a TrueCrypt password, right? I wouldn't fool around with Cuda, or any kind of gpu cracking. Being proprietary software, it won't be as stable or supported as the libre drivers. You said you have the words, or most of the words used in the password, and just have to arrange them correctly. The cpu should be more than enough to crack that in a timely manner.

I am having trouble enabling the Nvidia driver-forget Cuda. Lets focus on the driver only.

Use the libre driver it installed with. It isn't needed for your project.

It sure is hard on the eyes this resolution.
On Ubuntu I did get the Nvidia driver to work and was able to do some stuff except I couldn't get TC to work. On this TC is installed(an older version) but it is a real pain to look at. I still haven't figured out how to tell TC to crack my HD it is for full disk encryption not file encryption right?
I haven't figured out what to tell TC, I don't know how to point it to sdb1 or whatever I am supposed to.

Hmm... I thought your terminology was off, but it does sound like you're using vesa drivers. Is nouveau available through the package manager? That should install easily, and give you a nice looking display, but no advanced 3D or cuda.

You've setup a dictionary file with your proposed words, right? The documentation on the home page isn't clear, but have you tried giving it a drive address(use lshw in the terminal to find your drive, and see how it's mounted) for a file name(using the -t switch)?

How do I find out the name?
It's not a dead drive.
and how do I do this:
I know that the drive is coded with both Twofish and Serpent when I put it in I put it in as -t twofish -t serpent and it doesn't work. How should I be typing this in?

no it's loading the nouveau driver and it looks like crap, it looks as if it is in 640x480
And I can't see what's near the top of the screen because it goes past my TV's screen

That page is dangerous. That is the page I was following to get nvidia to work but even if I do everything right as soon as I reboot after xconfig the system refuses to boot- it has a black screen and a blinking cursor it never loads up, but it's not locked up because if I give the command to reboot it shuts down and reboots

Thank you guys
Do you know how I can install TrueCrack version 3.5 on Kali? The version they have in the Kali package is old.
Thanks

You'd have to compile from source. The instructions are on the truecrack website.

Well I just castrated my Kali again by following that site. Now I have the blinking cursor in the top left of my screen.
Any one know how to salvage this? I really don't want to have to go through this again(this makes about the seventh attempt.
Thank you.

Do a fresh install, and if the video looks ok, don't fool with gfx drivers. You don't need them to crack the container if the info you've given is accurate. Compile and install the latest truecrack if desired, start cracking.

it's a full disk that I am trying to crack. Not container.
Thanks for your rapid response.
I think that I need the real Nvidia driver either that or someone please tell me how I can scrunch up the screen-the way it is now I cannot see what is going on in the top portion of the display. I have to just guess with my mouse and remember the positions for later use.
Lucky for me, I've learned to use Clonezilla so that I don't have to start all over again.

ctrl+alt+f1 (or f2, f3, etc) should get you to a command line (outside of X) which will let you fix your problems without OS re-install. Are you sure you loaded the right driver? The only time I have seen problems like you are stating is when trying to use a driver version that didn't support the hardware.

The reason that I want cuda is that I have ten drives and I have the feeling it will take a long time

What do you mean ten drives? I thought you had one drive, and a set of possible passwords that had to be put in the correct order.

I have ten drives that I know the words for but don't know what order.
Cracking two of them would reveal what the password is for the whole bunch.

I still don't think you need gpu cracking. If you're sure about your words, or even as little as character set, the cpu should be more than enough. gpu cracking is for finding a needle in a hay stack. You're just looking for a specific rock in a bucket.

thank you for your reply.
I still haven't gotten it worked out how to point it to my drive. There is no simple thing such as a drive letter in Linux.

In the terminal type lshw and find the drive and mount point. an example would be /media/sda. Try using your results as the truecrypt file name.
