Getting the right LCD????

I would like to buy an LCD monitor but know very little about comparing them. Where can I find info on the specs for LCD's. Not the specific specs for a specific monitor, but what the different specs mean?

I know CRT's but I hate to just go buy an LCD because it looks good on the shelf. I need to be able to compare them technically.

Maybe Black Friday will produce some good buys and I need to be ready. I do no gaming so don't want to spend too much.
