Getting the most out of new router

Hey, I just got a new D-link DGL 4300, and I get a fairly low signal strength. Granted, mostly because my router is downstairs, and my other pc is upstairs and on opposite sides of the house. However, is there some router tweaks to boost more of an output signal? (I remember with my old linksys, tech support told me to change beacon period, rts threshold, etc,) but I don't remember the exact values, or what these do. Or if there is any 3rd party firmware?, any suggestions? (given that moving the router isn't an option)

So what exactly is the problem?

Low signal strength is fine as long as your signal to noise ratio is good. Try changing channels to 1, 6, 11 to see what offers the best performance.

Other than that make sure your antennas are oriented properly - don't "point" them at the computer as that's their weeakest point.

D-Link and NetGear Routers have No tweaks.

If your happiness depends on Tweaks, get a Buffalo or Linksys Router.

Otherwise, if your Computer Wireless Card can be fitted with external Antenna, get an High gain Directional Antenna.
