Getting the most out of 360 steering wheel

Just picked up a 360 steering wheel for xbox. Any tips? I like the feel of the wheel and the feedback is great but the pedals are taking some getting used to and I don't feel as confident with throttle/braking and feathering as I do with the joystick. Anyway to turn the paddles into throttle/brake?

picked it up at best buy for 100 bucks, not a bad price.

The brake/throttle body likes to move all around when I'm driving which can be problematic, might drill/epoxy some cleat mounts in it an use soft golf spikes. Just a thought I had.

Yeah, the pedals are going to shift no matter what. Basically have to hold it down with your other foot. In forza, I also felt that pushing the vibration/FF down to 50-75% gave a much better feel.

But make no mistake, you will get better lap times with the gamepad. The wheel makes it more realistic, but makes it harder.

Forget about changing the throttle/brake to the paddles - those are digital anyway, and good luck keeping your fingers on them when you turn.

That sounds like a challenge. right now I have the paddles set to look left/right.

I struggle with proper steering with the pad and that's why I got the wheel. If the paddles are digital then you're right, they're useless for throttle/brake. I must say that I like the feel and feedback of the wheel.

-edit-
I think I've found the problem...I'm treating the pedals like real pedals - they're not sensitive enough with the defaults. Off to adjust.

Test Drive Unlimited. One of my favorite games of all time and it's great for wheel, especially if you get Hardcore Mode.

EDIT: Sorry I thought you were asking for games.

I disagree about the lap times being lower with the gamepad. A guy using a gamepad won a forza tournament recently but the majority of the other racers were using steering wheel setups.

As far as the gas/brake pedals, what I did was get some RC Car suspension springs and glued them under each pedal to give them a little more feel. This has helped me tremendously when having to feather a rear wheel drive car around a corner.

In concern of the pedals moving around, I haven't found a good solution. I wear shoes when I race and use both feet (one for gas, one for brake) and force the unit into the carpet. I wish I had a better way!

The springs is a good idea as there isn't enough resistance on the pedals to know where you're at. Also the rubber "feet" on the bottom looks like you could force thread some golf spikes in there.

How about using adhesive (or some Velcro if you don't want it permanently bonded) and attaching the pedal assembly to something like a rubber car floormat? They usually have something on the bottom to keep them from sliding. Or even better, get a small "chair mat" which is plastic/rubber with little spikey "nubs" on the bottom to keep it from moving? Seems like either would work pretty well, at least in my head. 😛

How is the wheel Spidey? How heavy is it, and it is comfortable to use on your lap? I want to get one, but have no table or anything nearby to use the mount.

definitely had better lap times for myself with the wheel. and turn up sensitvity on pedals might be a good idea.
The game's steering is 100times better with the wheel for me, more natual. For games like NFS or paradise- use a joystick 100%, you can whip the car around etc. with forza, you need percison turning, so the wheel is great.

definitely worth it if you like forza!

Yeah, I took the deadzone on the pedals to like under 5% and outside to like 95%. I wanted full range of motion for more control and it seems to be working really well. I want the pedals to feel real and this seems to give a more realistic "feel". Then coupled this during freelaps with a telemetry screen to see how much throttle/brake I was actually applying.

The problem I had with the stick and why I got the wheel specifically is I would overcorrect/oversteer (meaning turn the wheel too much no matter what i was trying to do or steering in quick bursts of input). Not that I was moving the stick too much but couldn't really get a really clean line. It may just be personal preference. But so far I'm loving the wheel and the feedback it gives you is excellent, you can really feel when the traction control is kicking in.

Admittedly I can't feather the throttle or brakes as good as I can with a stick but I'll get there.

I don't mind using it on my lap, but I can see it being better on a table with your legs underneath it - more secure and doesn't move as much. It is pretty stout and only moves on your legs if you get into the game a little too much.

i borrowed my buddies today when i borrowed his 2nd 360 (since mine is officially RRoD for the 3rd time), and I'm giving it back to him tomorrow.

i tried burnout for like 5 minutes and just hated it. i know in forza it's a lot better but i doubt i'll ever play that game again. but in burnout it just does not feel good.

purbeast, it's not meant for arcade racers where steering, brakes, throttle are an all or nothing affair. And I love me some burnout but the wheel would be completely useless in that game, I wouldn't even try it.
