Getting the best sound I can...

Gosh, is this supposed to be in Peripherals forum?

Currently I have the Sound Blaster Live OEM version, coupled with the fairly inexpensive Altec Lansing ACS 33 or 43 or something like that. Anyway it's the 4 satalite with woofer system. Sound was pretty fair when I was using cd's but now that I'm working more with mp3's the high end is too sharp and the base is mostly non existatnt. The question is what would see a better improvment in sound, a higher end sound card or a more expensive speaker set up. Or are mp3's just always going to sound tinny? Anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks.

You might get improvement with better hardware, but I'd suggest doing some software processing on your MP3s.

I'm a fan of the DFX plugin, available for many media players.

Your CDs should be the better sound source. If MP3's do not sound as good I'd check what you are using to encode them. And, also, what you are using to play them.
