Getting surround sound from tv to stereo via toslink?

When my sound card died I discovered that I can run hdmi to my tv and then run my toslink cable from my tv to my stereo. But the sound seems to be stuck in stereo. Is there a way to enable surround sound from this configuration?

It's usually the case of the TV not being able to pass 5.1 back through optical from an HDMI source. Your best best is to get a cheap sound card with an optical output.

Run HDMI from your computer to your receiver. Run HDMI from receiver to TV.

Even with your stereo turned off, the signal will likely go through if you have decent cables.

ok I guess I have it figured out. All I have is one dvi to hdmi, and one hdmi to hdmi, so I couldnt daisy chain from pc to receiver to tv. But I was able to run the dvi from the pc to the hdmi on the tv, and also connect hdmi from the pc to the hdmi-in on the receiver.

Just curious- why not then just HDMI out from receiver to TV like giantpandaman2 said?
