Getting surgery tomorrow...

My finger's broken and twisted from football and I'm getting surgery tomorrow to untwist it. The doctor told me that he was putting in 2 wires/pins through my bone in order to stabilize it so that it's straight.

I was wondering if anyone had to have this type of surgery where metal things are put through your bones and I was wondering if it chronically hurts after surgery (if chronic for a time frame, can you tell me what time frame it hurt chronically for?)?

Thanks

(Tomorrow's going to suck :()

edit: thanks for the good lucks :)

Won't the wires or pins eventually be removed in a year or so after they heal? I imagine the holes created by the implants would eventually fill in with new bone growth over time after removing the foreign objects--and then shouldn't hurt more than the possibility of chronic pain from any break.

I had a friend a long time ago who dislocated his thumb pretty badly. When he came back to school the next day he had 2 pins in his thumb and a cast around it. After he got them out he said the doctor just froze the area and pulled the pins out and it didn't hurt at all. He never mentioned any pain after.

all I got to say is if you wake up with a sore ass and your doc seems really happy, I'd find another one.

I snapped my right scaphoid clear in half in a skateboarding accident a couple years ago. It wasn't just a fracture, but total separation. The titanium pin will stay in for the rest of my life, and it took a long time (>1 year) before I could use the hand for anything. It still hurts sometimes, with weather changes or when I do strenuous work on it, and I still can't do more than 10 pushups before it starts bothering me.

Get an anti-nausea med before you leave the hospital, just in case. I spent I don't even know how long lying on the bathroom floor puking over and over from the pain, and it kept getting worse because I couldn't keep down any of the pain meds.

Jeez, for something that seems small like a twisted, broken finger, putting wires through the bone just sounds bad! Meh, munch the 'killers you get and it'll be all good.

was it so separated that you could move around the broken bone as if it were not connected at all? Mine isn't that bad even though it's broken

So I guess they'll have to break your fingers again to realign them eh? Sounds like fun.

I broke by right ring finger and the Dr. used 2 pins. This was in 1980. The pins were removed after the cast came off. The Dr. pulled the pins out with neddle nose pliers after shooting the finger with some local ansethetic (sp).

No chronic pain but I lost some movement in the first joint below the knuckle. I can't make a tight fist because of that joint. Not really a problem unless I take up boxing at the age of 45. The joint is kinda stiff when it's really cold, but it doesn't get that cold in MS.

I recommend asking them not to use narcotics during the procedure. Many, many addicts start out their drugging careers getting hooked on painkillers during surgery.

:)
Good luck. Everything will be fine. Its not your fapping hand is it?

Yeah there was a visible gap on the x-ray.

From what I've heard, it doesn't hurt more than the break, but you can 'feel' the metal.

Post surgery was much more painful than the break, and I couldn't feel the metal at all.
