getting spam to an atot-only account.

I have comcast, and three email accounts.

one is for personal, one is for work, one is for ATOT.


my anandtech account gets TONS of spam. we're talking... 15-20 messages a day. What concerns me is that
1) my email visibility is off. it always has been, and always will be
2) NONE of my other comcast accounts gets this spam, neither do accounts where I post my email address online on other forums, etc...




have our email addresses *gasp* been sold?
 
I've gotten 2 spam messages in my various AT only email accounts during my time here.

Is the account name something easily generated? Some spam lists are generated by trying every possible email address in a popular domain and seeing what responses you get from mail servers. There are only 60.5 million ways to make a 5 character email address with numbers and letters, so chances are that you'll get a lot of spam with a short name. Comcast is a widely used ISP so it wouldn't surprise me if that was the case. Most of my email addresses are "rkyte@<something>.<something>" so this happens to me a lot.

Also, is your account name a common word? If it's in the dictionary you'll be getting spam.

It's less common than my other email accounts
 
The same thing has happened to me recently. The only ppl who has that particular email address is my immediate family and AT. For the past week or so, I am getting between 5-10 spam mails a day. No, no one else has this email address. No, I did not use it to sign up for or sing in anywhere else.

I have just changed my AT email adress to my spare gmail account. My heatware account, too.

Lets see what happens after a few weeks.

There's also a possibility that those e-mails are being targetted randomly and some are landing out of chance. Leaving out the domain part of your e-mail address, what's the username part of it? If it's something simple like "steve" then it's likely a random hit.
 
My ATOT e-mail is actually just a reroute to a Yahoo account, and I have noticed spam coming there with the route address in the "To" box, and I don't know where else it would be coming from. Hmmm.
