Getting smaller teams to join TA

Can't we maybe contact some of the smaller teams in SETI and ask them if they want to join their team under TA. They'll still be able to have their teams, now they'll just be part of something greater...

Yes, that is possible to do and I have nothing against it as long as every member on the team agrees with the decision. I would imagine that most teams would want to join so that they can be part of a superpower like TA as long as they can retain their team as a mini team within TA.

There's a lot of teams in just the top 200 that's got +- 10 members, with a lot of wu!!! If we want to win, something has got to be done. New user are great, but to keep the lead on BBR and even move up a few places we need a lot of wu and the smaller teams joining us would be a great solution, not just for us, but for them as well, don't you think?

What's up with that?

That is my way of saying, I find it a bit unethical to go after another team or users on another team. I would prefer to do with what we have and if they finish ahead of us oh well. I don't see the need to inflate our numbers through "canninbalism" just to move up a place or two. Its not all about the rankings its also about the fun and feeling of fam ily around here.

Sorry if I come across as uppity or snide but thats just the way I feel.

I think we need to ask ourselves, how would we feel if BBR just picked up a 200k team and overtook just with a lead of 150k?

We would kick ourselfs and wonder why we didn't think of that!!! But now we did, didn't we...
Good luck losing with that attitude dude...

Umm.... ok. Usually when someone responds to your post with a thought, or an additional question, you should respond in kind, not flame them for not agreeing 100%. It's what separates teammates from ATOT posters 🙂

If adding teams to jump ahead of people is good etiquette in this game, then ok. But I know personally I would feel cheated or ripped-off, if BBR suddently jumped to a seemingly insurmountable lead, just by adding another team. Especially now at the end.

Recruiting other teams is generally regarded as poor etiquitte. Now if someone who is a member of another team frequents here and decides that they want to join here and in the process convince their teammates to join as well - that is different. Openly courting other teams is not viewed in a good light.

we don't want to begin sounding like ARS :Q

It's a good idea but i see where the good etiquette comes up. Let's just do our best to get that #5 spot and hopefully attract other teams to us 😀

hmmm...

who is that in 5th place now???

Compaq? HP?

seems we were ahead of them at one time, they are mediocre in their daily output, hmmm...

oh yeah, they combined and leaped ahead

My feeling is, if it comes about naturally it's fine - but you don't openly campaign for it, that would be "bad form".

So if you're in an establishment, it's late and you've had a few and that other team is starting to look pretty attractive, you're thinking "maybe I should ask her if she wants to get outta here, come on over to my place for a nightcap..." that's one thing.

It's not like you stalked her to this joint just to try & get her drunk, maybe slip her a little pill & take her for all her WU's, right? ... right?

😉

I don't get it.. are you trying to imply that's there's something besides SETI WUs that we'd actually want? 😕

heheheheh...

then you have those guys that will just go out and buy WU's, I mean, paying for it??

LOL! 😀
What OD said 🙂

Yeah, if a team opted on their own to join us it's one thing, but it's my feeling to go recruiting teams is not a good idea. We'll do the best we can & let the WU's fall where they may.

I'd have to vote not for recruitment.

If you think about the extreme case, where more and more teams merge into, say, 3 or 4 really big teams, all the sense of competition in a computing sense would be gone. There would be much less benefit for a team in recruiting new members and pushing current members harder (which is the only real way that the overall process benefits) and more energy would be spent on the politics of the thing. Not only that but no new teams would ever form because there would be no hope of accomplishing anything as a small team.

I think it's exciting when there's hundreds of teams and everyone is within range of someone else. That way immediate effort on the actual computing/recruiting process is alwas felt.

I know a few uber teams is taking it a bit to the extreme but, on the whole, many small teams seems more interesting and beneficial to me.

I agree, we shouldn't go canabalizing other teams's best members. We would build up a bad reputation that way.

I've got another two cents to add on this matter, if anyone cares to listen...

I don't thing work units should be transferrable at all. If I spend a year on the TeAm and produce 10, 000 units and then I decide to defect to team starfire (god forbid :Q 😉) the work I spent here should not go with me. I put that effort in on this team, I shouldn't be able to take that back.

This way a team's rank would be judged solely on their raw computing ability/effort and not on how many other teams decide to join them at opportune times.

Just my opinion. Wuddyall think? I don't suppose they'll ever implement it this way so it doesn't really matter anyways

There are a few projects that do that, Seventeen or Bust is one example of that. Individual stats stay with you, but only the work done for the team you're on counts for that team, and any work done for another team stays with that team.

I doubt they will do it with such a huge project as Seti (well, they won't do it with Seti as it is now, as it's ending soon) and I doubt they will do it with Seti2 either, but they can prove me wrong if they want 😉

I am also a member of the "don't actively recruit other teams" club. Subtle hints and their own decisions, yes, but not "come join TA and be l33t", that is very bad ettiquette (or however the hell you speel it)
