A small business approached me with a chance to make some extra money. They have a windows 2000 network 1 exchange server a sonicwall pro 230 firewall. They also use veritas for tape backups and dsl for internet use. They also use the sonicwall to vpn into the network. Also they use a custom software application that I'm familiar with. This company has 30 employees. How much would you guys charge them for support I was thinking on the lines of 50 per hour with 20 hours of support a month this comes out to around to about 12,000 a year. A friend of mine works there and told me that some guy claims that he can support them for 5 hours a month is that possible. Also if any of you guys have ever done this could you please give me some pointers on how to structure the contract.

if your going to structure a contract, there is only one way : HIGHER A LAWYER... no this is not cheap, but you'll get screwed eventually otherwise.

Dont know where you live, but the standard rates could be between $60/hr to $150/hr depending on the type of work being performed and the level of expertise required.

Also, you'll need insurance, it can be expensive as well, and some client will require proof of it. then of course there is the tax issues that arise for state and federal...

OR

just do it "under the table" so that they will face legal ramifications if they decide to mess with you. 😛

I do $90 an hour for a company with a similar setup. I charge half that rate for anything that I can fix over the VPN though.
