getting slow

okay so i built a rig about 6-7 months ago, now it is starting to get slow on start up. i mean its fast to get to the windows but it takes really long for the windows to get started. the background comes up but i have to wait about a min. before i can click the start button. after that its fine. is there a way that i can fix this? any ideas are welcome

Freshgeardude is right on regarding defragmentation---but read your tune XP documentation carefully because some of the changes can be irreversible.

I would also be looking at bloatware you may have installed---things like Norton suites--or zonealarm--and look to replace them with leaner software that does the same thing.

You can also take various programs off your start up list using msconfig or use various free downloadable utilities.
