Getting sick of trying to get Linux to work, another problem?

I have had more problems lately trying to get various flavors of Linux to work, my latest problem is after a redhat 7.1 install (which went fine) when booting the OS it will stop with the error:

Code: bad eip value
Kernel Panic: attemted to kill the idle task
in idle task - not syncing

It will load fine in safe mode, anyone know what could be wrong?

Abit BP6 with dual Celeron 500s, 256mb RAM, TNT card, Maxtor 8gb HDD, everything is pretty standard I guess

EIP stands for extended instruction pointer. I really don't know why you are getting kernel panics, but try searching Google using the terms "linux kernel panic bad eip"....it turned up a great number of hits for me.

You can read the kernel documentation for how to use ksymoops to debug the kernel you're using, that may give you helpful information.

Good luck.

Kernel panicks, if your having problems from the default redhat install, can also indicate hardware problems. I had a bad simm (256MB) that would constantly make the kernel crash. I then booted with mem=64mb and it worked perfect

You mentioned having problems with other distros, Have you downloaded them all? On what kinda connection? What kinda problems did you have with them? What burning software are you using and at what rate? Could be bad burns, do you check the checksums after you download? Because, even if they seem like the burn correctly something can be damaged.

I'm downloading on a T1 line, and have tried different software and burners, burning doesn't seem to be the problem, I have also bought Mandrake Power Pack boxed vesrion and have had problems with it too.

How big of a powersupply do you have? Are you trying SMP support from the install? Did you get the same errors when you tried the other distros?
