Getting RPM / speed info from car?

How hard is it to get the current RPMs and/or speed from a car? Are there ports somewhere that this info can be read from?

Depends on the car. I don't know if this kinda stuff is still done manually or through computer.

Often it can be taken via an inductive sensor on a plug wire.

Companies sell OBD-II interfaces for doing that.

There are quite a bit of information you can get from the OBD-II interface other than the RPM and speed of the car.

just get the converter thing and download their free software and you're good to go
