Getting ready to overclock

Hey guys,

I have a E6300 with a Gigabyte GA-965P-S3 and Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400 (2GB).

I have had the system up and running now for about 3-4 weeks... I would like to start overclocking. However, I wanted to establish a base temp first and make sure that they are ok.

I have run run speed fan, core temp, and tat.

Essentially, at idle, speed fan and core temp are reporting 40C. However, TAT is reporting 57C. Are these temps alright?

It is the stock heatsink.

You should be able to go up to around 2.8-3.0 Ghz with the stock heatsink. And yeah, iTAT reports the temp from the hottest part of the processors' core; it's always much hotter. That's perfectly normal. See this thread.

I assume thats with TAT stressing the CPU, if so then it's fine.

No.. that is idle...

Tat is about 17degrees hotter than anything else...

Something odd about that, at idle on my rig TAT shows 1-2c higher than core temp, speed fan and the others. No way it should show 17c higher unless you launch it.

Well, it is running as you can tell from the pic...

But, I don't think that it is actually doing anything to put any load on the cpu...

yeah... it's not running.. (Look at the "Start Button next to the 100% Workload. If it was running, it'd say "STOP"). You need to do something about those temps.

Hmm... Ok.. I will try to reseat the heatsink...

Strange that there is that much difference between the readings...

At the moment i have my E6400 @ 2.6(FSB at 1302) using Arctic Freezer 7 Pro and my idle temps are around 21/22 with CoreTemp & TAT is 23/24. When i had my stock CPU HSF on my temps werent even close to that high. I agree with PCTC2.

AMAZING how no one asked him to get his steppings when he resetted his sink. OR how no one told him to reapply any form of TIM after resetting.


Anyhow op, i wouldnt reset that sink again, unless you have AS5, or some form of tim laying around.

Also, ocing has more to do on the batch of your cpu. There should of been a series of letters and numbers printed ontop of your cpu:

Mine read: L631B120

The key letter you want to look at is the middle one. Mine says B

Yours might say A-F & L? i could be wrong, im not too familar with anandales. Dont quote me 100% on this.

That is your Target batch. This will tell you on average how well your cpu will overclock. If you letter is B like mine, ive heard these girls can do 3.4~3.8 with about 1.45 voltage.


Another thing Voltage, your running a stock hsf, so i would highly advise against raising it. At around 1.4V according to duvi the heat output on these suckers almost double. That would be enough to bring a tuniq idling at around 35-40C. Lets not compare your stock fan to a tuniq.


If you want to get into OCing, get a better heat sink. Thats my first bit of advice. Otherwise your going to hit a major voltage wall, when your cpu could do a lot higher with better cooling.
