Getting ready to order a 4300, but I have one question...

unless you have a really crappy board, and really crappy luck with the cpu.

It should do 1066.

But you have to be sure you get certain things in check. Like heat. If your new to overclocking, i suggest you google search on the web, and then read up a bit b4 you buy parts. Some boards IE. EVGA 680i will give newbies a serious heart attack. Overclocking is NEVER PLUG n PLAY.

I've seen lots of people complain they can't get their e4300 past 3.0 GHz. I never saw anyone complain they couldn't get past 2.4GHz = 1066 FSB.

the problem is your board will take the 800 mhz strap. What you should do is BSEL mod to 1066 fsb. This will allow most people to reach much higher than 3.0 ghz. I have one running at 3.5 ghz 24/7 @ 1.53 measured vcore. Seems to be a great little chip if you take the time to mess with it. Check VR-Zone for the BSEL mod.

I had to read your post twice to realize what you're saying. Are you saying that even a board that has a BIOS update for the e4300 and supports 800 FSB, like the GA-965P-S3, will still take the 800 strap instead of the 1066 strap and that's why everybody's topping out at 3.0 GHz?

Correct. If you can force the 1066/1333 strap you will go much higher.

This is the reason DFI Bios have the BSEL/Strap selection built in.

what's the BIOS setting called (on Asus, MSi, Abit boards) that determines "strap"? Like, how do you set to 1066 "strap"?

Holy s***! Somebody needs to spread the word on this thing. I've seen people complaining for months about the e4300 not getting above 3.0 GHz. I never saw anyone suggest the pin-mod except for cheap motherboards that don't have any options to raise the FSB to 266.

Bios doesn't determine the strap. Bsel determines the strap. Most boards don't switch from 800 strap to 1066 and that is why you top out. The so called "fsb wall."

I had an E4300 top out at 302 fsb on a Asus 680i. Did the BSEL mod and it now tops out at 400 fsb. If you can't switch strap you are limited by the NB not the cpu.

My DS3 seems to change the strap from 800 to 1066 at 334 FSB. I'm using an E4300.

does anybody know if the bsel mod will work on the pentium e's? i'm planning on getting the 2160, and i mean it's basically an e4300 with half the l2 cache disabled (i presume), so it should work, right?

i guess nobody would know for sure now, but any thoughts?

EDIT: hm...I just thought of another question. Would it be possible to mod an E4300 (or any 800MHz FSB stock processor) to the 1333MHz FSB?
