I am planning on going with AMD and was wondering if I should go with socket AM2 or socket 939?

If you don't already have some stuff (most notably a motherboard and memory), go AM2. The performance difference is negligible and you'll have DDR2 if you ever want to jump to conroe.

Alright I'm sure that ~99% of people here will say something like "STOP, WAIT, get a Conroe C2D system its much faster, etc. etc."

So I'll just say it. If your looking to do a new build, look into the Core 2 Duo (Conroe) Intel systems. They are infact faster then any AMD system. So unless you have all that stuff, look into Intel and there Core 2 Duo's. Me like the E6600.

If you still want to go with AMD a cheap Sck 939 system is good but if you want to jump on the DDR2 bandwagon go for AM2. Then if you wanted Conroe/C2D then you could upgrade easier.

The S939 will be dead by the end of this year. Go with AM2 if you plan to upgrade in the future.

of course E6600 is good but it's not cheap and neither is a motherboard to go with it..

How much do yu want to spend on this thing, if you plan ons spending 350 + on a motherboard/cpu then of course Conroe

But if not a X2 3800+ is fine, I'd say AM2

Yea I don't want to go with conroe because of price. I am planning on spending no more than $1000 total and need everything (monitor, keyboard, mouse, case, etc...) that is why I was planning on AMD.
