Let's say a cop paces you at 20 over the limit and when he gets to your door and you roll down your window he notices you have a GPS and the max speed on it is showing much higher can he charge your for going that speed?

Depends upon the state. Some states require the offense to be actually seen by an officer. Other states, if there is any indication, you can be prosecuted / cited for it.

I'm not sure they can.

Videotapes which show you speeding (can see the speedo) can be used as evidence against you, I know..

Those kinds of laws are different in different states, so the best thing to do is next time you are pulled over, to question the cop about this. Then let us know!

Interesting question.. what if the speed is lower than what the officer says?

GPS's are not always 100% accurate I've had them screw up a few times for a second and say im going a 200mph or some insane number, don't think it can be used. Many states also require it to be seen by an officer, they have to radar u at that speed, or be following u matching your speed to ticket you.

I've seen this too but the 147 mph max showing on my brother's is real I'm sure of it. He's got so much lead in his feet his toes could be used for solder.

I doubt they can. GPS can say a lot of things. When I first turned my unit on, it said Max speed 300 mph :D

Yep, bridges can cause a loss of signal can cause a huge jump in the calculated speed. I've seen max speeds of 500 kph off of my gps.

How would he know if you were driving the max speed on a public road?

a GPS is not a recognized method of obtaining speed for prosecution by law enforcement. Any ticket given for such is easliy fought. Radar guns are calibrated for a reason.

Not likely. He has no way of knowing where you did that speed. It may have been at a race track.
